Bird sounds different

Postby jljonathan on Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:26 pm

We have an 11 year old male cockatiel who has been very healthy. He usually makes a good deal of noise with loud chirps and singing. Yesterday, he started making very soft short high pitched chirps/whistles that he has never made before. I tried to encourage him to do some loud chirping, but he will not. He's eating fine, looks good, everything seems ok except for the sounds. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Jonaahan

Any change in the sounds a bird makes warrants a vet exam and testing for chlamydia. Tiels are especially vulnerable to this disease, which is treatable once diagnosed. However, it can be transmitted to other birds and to humans, particularly children, elderly, pregnant, or immune-suppressed by chronic disease or drugs, such as chemo. Aspergillosis can also cause vocal changes. Both require prompt attention!

I hope your boy is just playing around to scare you
