Here We Go Again

Postby Rosies Mommy on Fri Nov 07, 2008 2:41 pm

:( my poor baby has been sleeping ALOT lately.. I mean she gets her 13hours of bedtime every night. But even with that she has been sleeping a good 2-3 hours at a time just to wake up for 15-30 minutes at a time and go right back to sleep.. Her morning and noon appetite haven't been very good either the last 3 days. The dr wants to do blood tests on her again but I am so afraid to have that done. Her poop looks good and they said that she has no eggs forming. Physically he said she looks good. But I don't know what to do. After her last blood test I am terrified of having blood work done again but feel like I should because I don't want to be missing something that the blood work could catch. *sigh*

Yes, I almost lost her.. They took out her blood and didn't stop the bleeding properly, she continued to bleed out and they sent us on our way.. She looked really bad when we got in the car so I took her back in, they took one look at her grabbed her, rushed her to the back and put her in a little like incubator and they gave her a nebulizer treatment and oxygen.. They said thats what they do when they are losing a bird :(. This would be the 3rd time this year that she would have blood taken out.. *sigh* I am so confused as to what to do.

I know it's so hard to decide to when you should take them to the vet. I remember with Pip, he was all happy and fine and nothing appeared to be wrong at all.......just the wetness coming from his nose was the only symptom.....so I let it go for a little bit since he seemed fine, but then once it started happening more frequently I just took him to the vet because I knew something was wrong. He behaved normally, ate normally, pooped normally, although I did notice one day it was a little runny, but just the one day, so that can be normal. He ended up on meds for bacterial infection. I figure....if they are acting normally, eating normally, and pooping normally, then maybe give it another day or two and just keep a close eye and if it still keeps bothering you that something doesn't seem right, then I'd take her. I know my tiels sleep alot on some days too, but I think they may not have gotten enough sleep the night before and also a dreary day may make her nap more often as well. It could be that for some reason she is not sleeping soundly and waking up at night.....maybe there is a mouse in the house or something! :o I know it's that time of year here and we always get them.
Tiels are very light sleepers! I notice it alot now with the two others......they sleep alot more soundly than Woody and Boss.......all I have to do in the middle of the night is turn off a dimly lit light and I can hear Woody "chirp" so I know they respond to everything at night even when they're supposed to be sleeping!

Well I took Rosie to the dr on Thursday night. But he didn't see anything wrong with her but since she is sleeping all day and all night and her appetite had decreased he said that he wanted to draw blood again. Which they done 3 months ago and it was a very bad experience. So now I am torn as to whether I should have more blood drawn or not. I'm scared to death to chance it. And have no idea what the right thing to do is.

Rosie's mom-- if she needs bloodwork, do not be afraid--I know that is hard to hear, but try not to be. From what I understand, you now have a new vet, and there should not be a problem... I have had my birds get blood drawn, and the vet has done it in front of me (which scared me to death) but at least I saw it happen, and could talk to Bubba, and try to keep him calm. no matter what the vet says, the bleeding should stop IMMEDIATELY. The vet handed Bubba to me after the bloodwork was taken, and had me look at the needle wound--there was no excess bleeding, just a little red mark on his neck. Ask your vet to draw the blood in front of you, and then stay there so you can observe her at the vet's. I know how scary the incubator can be... Annabelle had a very, very bad reaction to some herbal meds given to her at the vet's, aspirated, and was not recovering.... they kept her at the vet's for observation for several hours afterwards... very scary, but I knew she was in good hands and was at the best place possible for her to have a medical emergency--that is how much confidence I had in this vet--so much so, that even though I am accross the state now, I will take Bubba there to have his bloodwork done and liver problem treated--because she is the best.

If there really is a problem, she could get worse, and then you will be in bigger trouble. Did they just do a physical exam on her, or did they do any more tests?

They just done a physical exam on her. He said that he don't trust a gram stain very much because there is always bacteria in poop.. He wanted to do the blood work but I was too scared after her last experience.. when they took her back to me the last time we were standing there discussing Rosie and I looked and Rosie had all kinds of blood on her neck and I told the Dr that she was bleeding and sure enough she was so they took her back to the back to stop the bleeding and clean her up.

She had a good day yesterday but today she has slept all day again and hasn't ate much since breakfast.. Which is unlike her.. I guess as much as I hate to do it I may just have to take her in for that blood work tomorrow.. Her poop looks good..

Please keep her in your prayers.. I was trying not to have to get the blood work done but it looks like I am going to have to

Awww, it wil be ok.......just look at it this way, it's only a minute or so of time and just make sure before you leave and let them know your concerns about bleeding.....then once all is ok and you're outa there, it's all over and in a short amount of time.......then you will have peace of mind. Good luck to you and Rosie that the bloodwork turns out ok and she is back to her normal self soon!

I really think Rosie is hormonal. Especially since you've said she doing the 'booty' thing. Hormones beat the crap out of our birds. And if you have been hand feeding her warm foods she thinks you are her mate.
Me, personally, after different things you've said and this is a repeat issue I would NOT do blood work right now. I thinks she is hormonal and needs rest. Lucille is going through the same thing right now....
I would TALK to your vet and tell him/her about the booty thing and the hand feeding and how Rosie has done this before to get a professional opinion. This would give you peice of mind.

I did tell him about the booty thing. But she hasn't done it in a few days now.. He said that in his experience birds do not sleep alot when they are hormonal.. OMG I am so confused because I am scared to let this go if something is wrong but I am afraid to do the blood test because of her last experience.. It has been about a week now and she is still the same, I don't know if I should give it more time or if it is time to take action?
