Avalanche

Postby crazy4tiels88 on Sat Oct 11, 2008 2:51 pm

I got Avalanche in august and was told a male cause I had plans to breed him next year to Ivory but he is very quiet hardly ever makes noise so I think it may be a girl it is still 5-6 months old and not that tame will sit on my finger for a minute but thats all and he freaks at hands in cage so he breaks blood feathers so if he doesn't tame down and turns out to be a female unfortuntly I am going to trade him in for a whiteface pied or pearl male tiel!!

    beautiful bird!

Could you have a simple dna test done???
I know here in Oz there are companies that do them, you have to pull a feather out and send that in and within a a week or so you get your results.........
Might be worth it in your case :)

Are you aware that breeding two birds of the same mutation together produces inferior birds? It is best to keep the two you have and find birds that are split for the mutation you want.

This will keep the undesireable traits down to a minimum and keep the health of the birds up.

In breeding of gouldians, no reputible breeder will breed two birds that are white breasted toghether, this also goes for the blue mutations and the yellows as well. People who do these things end up with smaller birds, and in the case of the blues, ones that cannot absorb vitamins correctly.

When breeders of cockatiels bred lutino mutations together, they ended up creating the lutino bald spots that tiels are plagued with. Only with careful breeding can we preserve the genetic stock that we currently have. Why risk putting more birds out there that could carry a genetic defect that can easily be prevented by breeding in a more careful manner?

Try reading this site http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/genetics.htm They can help you pair your birds correctly for healthy offspring that will carry the traits you desire.

The females will have dull coloring on their cheeks and crests and the males have much brighter cheek patches and crests. Also the males are the big talkers and whistlers while the females are more quiet. Hope this helps!

From what I've read, almost ALL whiteface lutinos will be female.

It has proven out to be true with the whiteface lutinos I've had here...

*shrugs* I could be wrong, but you can check the mutation charts if you know w hat the parents are?

I do plan on getting him or her dna tested and I am sure it is a male but am baffled as he/she is quiet sometimes and then all the sudden he will sing to Ivory my female that I plan to breed to him but am really thinking about breeding Vulture to Ivory and get splits then next year breed Avalanche to one of Ivory's babies and then it won't be inbreeding and won't be harmful!! Thanks, Melissa & The Flock O'Tiels

That would be a much better plan. Since the chicks will be splits and you breed those together, then you will get at least some of the clutch in the coloring that you want. Much healthier for the birds too.
