Very sad :o(

Postby mytielwoody on Sat Oct 04, 2008 7:09 pm

Today after my brother's wedding we decided to go pick up Patches. Turns out Patches is a female and has laid eggs before and is younger than I thought.....only two or two and a half yrs. old. We went to the home of the owner and they live in an upstairs apartment. We were there for a while talking, the owners.....husband and wife, the wife's mom is good friends with my mom and I also knew her growing up. Anyway, we left with Patches and I had my boyfriend Kevin carry the cage. When he got outside with it, the bottom of the cage just fell off! He slammed the top half of the cage down and there was a gap because the cage had a seed guard and Patches got away and flew off. I stood there in shock, not a thing I could do.....I had shoes with heels for the wedding and I started wondering if I hadn't and was right there if there was something I could do. We didn't have the heart to go back in and tell them so we shoved the cage in the car and left. I called my mom though once I got home and she is gonna tell the lady she is friends with who is this girl's mother. She said it might be best for them to know because it might make us look guilty of doing something wrong if we don't say anything and they find out. Me and Kevin thought it might be best not to say anything.......what's the point now? I am going to put some adds and see if maybe someone finds her........she took off in a pretty highly populated neighborhood where chances of coming into contact with someone is good.
I know the owner cleaned the cage just prior to us coming there, and I am thinking maybe she might not have put the cage back together correctly. Also.....we had no clue that the cage came apart this way and that the bottom was detachable, otherwise we would have made sure to carry it from the bottom instead of the handle on top! Also one of the spots where there bottom attaches is broken, and the piece of plastic that broke off is not in the bottom of the cage, so I believe that it may have been broken beforehand. I can't believe that this happened and I feel terrible. From now on I am taking my mom's advice and not getting involved with things like this......people should really find their animals homes on their own anyway. I was trying to help out and now look what happened. From now on when situations come up like this I am not going to take any responsibility for anyone's else's animals because I can't deal with anything like this happening again.........very sad :(

Oh, Kim! I'm soooo sorry. This is not fair to you at all. I know how much you care for all feathers creatures. I can only imagine how bad you feel. But it truly wasn't your fault. After all, if Patches' people hadn't chosen to leave her behind neither you nor Patches would have found yourselves in this predictament. Don't let this sad experience change your loving, helpful nature. Maybe Patches was just destined to find her own new home! Huggles to you!

That's horrible and I know you are feeling terrible about it, but you have to remember that it was an accident. There's no way you could have predicted something like this happening. Don't let that stop you from trying to help another bird.

There's a story that may be appropriate here...

After a horrible storm one day, a man and his young son are walking on the beach. The beach is covered in washed up starfish from that morning. The little boy keeps stopping, picking up a starfish, and throwing it back into the ocean. The father starts getting annoyed because their walk is taking so long. The little boy stops again, and the father says "son, there's no way you can save them all." The boy looks up at him and says "I know but if I can save just one, it's worth trying."

I know it did not work out this time, but who's to say that it won't with the next one?
The best things in life are those who share it with you.

Well, I think I am over the inital shock I felt yesterday when this happened.....today I just feel really sad, but I want to try to stay hopeful that someone will find her. Tomorrow I am going to put an add in a local paper there and also I have browsed through some photos and found ones that look similar to Patches so my family over there can print out flyers with a pic. I have to at least try to find her. The same thought has crossed my mind though after someone telling me that sometimes things happen for a reason, and I was thinking the same thing......maybe she will end up finding her home this way after all! Crazier things have happened! Someone emailed me from my post on craigslist and told to email two places with info on the missing bird and that maybe they can help, so I have. Right now I am trying to stay hopeful here as we do have alot of things going in our favor.......she got out in a good place to get found......alot of houses, very popluated, and....the weather is not bad either.....days are still warm and nights cool, but not too bad, and I believe the weather's supposed to stay nice for a while......so I am hoping!

Yes, I listed her, and I have also contacted some other bird groups around here that someone had emailed to me and told me to contact. Today I called a local paper there.....it's a free paper that people get with lots of adds, so everyone in that area gets it.....I placed an add in there today and they told me that they give you the add free for the first week because it's a missing animal. I also called the animal control for that town and he took my name and number and said he would call me if anyone called in with a found bird.

I went to this site......http://www.flickr.com/groups/cockatiels/pool/page13/ and tried to find a pic in there that is close to what she looks like......my son made flyers with the pic, and my sister, neices and nephews will put up the flyers. It wasn't easy finding a pic that looked like her......I think she may be a cinnamon pearl pied.......she has pearling on the wings and mostly yellow head, very pale color grey, pink feet and beak and a tiny bald spot that lutinos have. She really is very pretty. We were there quite a while before we left so I had a chance to get a good look at her and know what she looks like.
Thanks for hoping......I am hoping really hard because tonight and tomorrow night here are supposed to get pretty cold......after those two days though it's supposed to warm up, but two cold nights is not good if she's still out there. I sure hope once she's over the shock of being out, that she realizes that humans are a good place to go to for food! Alot of them do find their way to someone, and she got out in an area where there's lots and lots of people.....nice yards, maybe even a bird feeder or two! so I'm trying to stay positive that she gets found.

This is sooo sad... :( I just wish patches knows how to return to the apartment where you first saw her, of only they can do that. I hope that she is not harmed by any other birds or animals or even cruel humans. Please keep us posted.
