House guest

Postby mytielwoody on Wed Sep 24, 2008 9:33 pm

Seems I may be having a guest here soon. I know this woman who is good friends with my mom....her daughter is moving across the country to arizona and she does not want to take her cockatiel with her, so she's been looking for a home for him. I thought I had found one here with a girl from work, but she doesn't seem interested anymore and didn't show enough interest in going to pick him up, and he is free with cage! Then another girl I work with who has two birds at home seemed interested, then changed her mind too!! :x So now the owner is moving in Oct, and still has no home for this little guy, so I told her I would take him here and find him a good home. I wish that I could keep him, but one more bird here and I think my boyfriend might move out! lol At least I can keep him here for a while until he has a good home with someone who WANTS him! His name is Patches and he's a boy, not sure of his coloring, he is hand tame and is about 5 or 6 years old. I will be taking him if she does not find anyone else, either after my sisters wedding this coming weekend, or my brothers wedding the weekend after!! Both are about one hour away over in NY state where my family is and where Patches is. I will update if he does end up coming here, which I think he probably will, with pics and more info. My job then will be to find him a good loving home!

Poor Patches! I can not beleive the owner doesn't want to take him with her :(
Sometimes my husband "suggests" that we move to San Francisco. I get a knot in my stomache thinking about driving my little PT across country with all my birds packed in my car. I could not imagine giving my birds up as much as they can be royal pains sometimes.
You will find that when people know you have birds (and have a nice house for them) people will come out of the woodworks offering their birds up to you. As you know I have ten little boogers. More than half of them are "adoptees".
Has Patches ever had a vet visit? That is a question you should ask this person to see if he has had a check up (gram stain) at some point.
keep us updated :P

I don't think he has been to a vet, but they've had him for about five years now and no other birds, and he has been healthy and happy all that time, so chances are he's in good health, he hasn't been around any other birds. I plan to keep him in another room apart from my birds anyway.....after being an only bird for as long as he has, mine might shock him a bit! Plus it will probably be a stressful change for him, so giving him some quiet time without my little stinkers bugging him will probably be better for all.
I know what you mean about never being able to give them up.....mine are making a huge racket today....only the tiels though......the other two are being good.....usually they jump right in and join in the noise!

I agree whole heartedly! I drove from Oaklahoma to California in my Honda CRX, during the worst snowstorm in 15 years! It was 11 below (wind chill factor 44 below) the day I left. I had to go down to Interstate 10 because all the other east/west routes were closed. I got snowbound for 24 hours in Albuquerque, ran into a wind storm at Indio, and had to come north on 101 in a rainstorm because 5 was closed because of snow. And my 10 year-old budgie came with me! Since I had her in the car and it was so cold, I couldn't stop to eat so I did drive thru food all the way. Ran to the potty when I stopped for gas. Carried her into the motel wrapped in a huge blanket every night. The plus side is that I made record time--and I still had my budgie when I got here! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. One doesn't leave one's family behind!

Slightly off subject: I checked with the Highway Patrol re: road conditions in Indo CA. I told the office where I had come from & road conditions on the way (snow, sleet, black ice, rain, wind--everything but a tornado). He called to the back room and said,"Hey, guys, I found her! I found the one who's been causing all this!"

OMG Bubble lady! You are lucky you made it alive to your destination! I took ALL my birds to a cottage up by the Canada border. What a road trip...It took me 8 1/2 hours without any lunch stops. I was too afraid of even doing a "loo stop" because I did not want to leave my birds in the car. Lucily my husband was with me so we took turns for 2 minute hopper breaks.I'm always afraid of the car breaking down in a scary section especially in crappy weather

 I just read in today's local paper that a house in the neighboring town got raided by the ASCPA. This guy in a small apartment had 83 budgies! The apartment was filthy and all the budgies were flying around plus had chewed the electrical wiring.
So now the animal rescue has all these budgies up for adoption (Some are in not so good shape :( )

He'll be coming home with me next weekend after my brother's wedding, either on Sat. or Sun, not sure just yet as I thought it would be better to transport during the earlier hours of the day. I know of a guy who's interested in him, but I don't know the guy and he lives quite far, about an hour away. He has a bird room an two other tiels......but I am hesitant because I'd rather have someone closer by me or someone I know....this way I can see where he's going and feel more secure that he's going to his forever home.

Nice job woody. So sad that his owner doesn't want to take him, but he is so blessed for having you. :)
