Growing up fast

Postby Claudia on Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:16 am

:D wow look at them, just two days after the first picture (under "worried")

Image

the one at the back has got it's eyes open and has got a fair bit of grey on him already :)

there is still 1 more egg but I don't think that is going to hatch anymore, Meg and Noah are pretty much out of the nest constantly now unless they are feeding the chicks

first clutch and must say am extremely proud of the parents, especially Noah has turned out to be the most devoted dad ever!
When I put the bubs back into the box after cleaning it out yesterday, he immediately hopped onto the perch and stuck his head through the hole as if to say "Are we all here? All ok?" :lol:

Noah and Megs get broccoli or bok choy every day, those are the only vegies they really enjoy........
They get a slice of bread in the morning which they devour, and another one in the afternoon.
I replace their seed three times a day at the moment :shock: cause they just eat and eat and eat, I guess with 6 bubs to feed you have no other choice :wink:
Unfortunately they do not touch their pellets :cry:
I also give them a soft mix of pellets, egg & biscuit and a little seed mixed with some warm water but they don't like that much either though I do see them touch it occasionally.....
They have 2 cuttlebones in their aviary and they are both being demolished ! :lol:

Look at the bottom bubby, (s)he has a yellow crest, soooo cute :D Wonder what mutation (s)he is going to be??? Thought the greys and whitefaces would have had a grey crest???? Anyone?
Mum is a whiteface pearl but split for pied and dad is grey split for whiteface but I reckon also split for pied as he has some white feathers on the back of his head..........

Hi Claudia,

Glad to see the kids are all OK. They are just adorable when in the "peach fuzz" stage :) Have you tried feeding the parents boiled shrimp? Shrimp is one of the highest foods in protein content of anything you could feed them. I'd give it a try.. and the nice thing about it is, you can boil a few, feed hot, and then put the rest in the 'fridge for a few days. I used to take out one or two, heat them up in some hot water, then shred them and feed to Smokey and Missy. They would in turn, feed the chicks, and then come back for more, and repeat this every few minutes. It's amazing how much food they can eat or ingest when they are feeding a bunch of hungry mouths! Those chicks need all the protein they can get, but also need lots of carbs, and with them eating bread, they are getting a good dose of carbs from that. It will be interesting to see what kind of colorations you get with the chicks. Hoping they all continue, and you'll see them start fledging about 4 weeks most likely.

It will be interesting to see what the babies feather out to be. Linus & lucille which are normal greys had 50% lutino babies! (2 greys and 2 lutinos!) The diet sounds pretty good! :)

Sam, could the one with the yellow crest be something "different"??
Mum is whiteface pearl split for pied and dad normal grey split for whiteface but also has some white feathers on back on his head so also split for pied????
I am really hoping for a pied, wanna keep that one in that case :D

This is them now......

They yellow crest does signal that that baby is pied. Normals and whiteface tiels have grey crests, pied and lutino have yellow, whiteface lutino would be white.

According to the cockatiel color palette http://www.kirstenmunson.com/cockatiels/index.html
If mom is what you say and dad is not split for pied, this would be what you should get:

Mother:Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Grey Split To Whiteface

male offspring:
25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
25% Whiteface Split To Pied {X2: Pearl}
25% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
25% Whiteface Split To {X2: Pearl}

female offspring:
25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface
25% Whiteface Split To Pied
25% Grey Split To Whiteface
25% Whiteface

If dad is split to pied (x1) then:

Mother:Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Grey Split To Whiteface {X1: Pearl}

male offspring:
13% Pearl Split To Pied Whiteface
13% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
13% Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
13% Whiteface Split To Pied {X2: Pearl}
13% Pearl Split To Whiteface
13% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
13% Whiteface Pearl
13% Whiteface Split To {X2: Pearl}

female offspring:
13% Pearl Split To Pied Whiteface
13% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface
13% Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
13% Whiteface Split To Pied
13% Pearl Split To Whiteface
13% Grey Split To Whiteface
13% Whiteface Pearl
13% Whiteface

Christie what a cool website :D
You put Noah as split for pearl but should be split for pied so here are "my" results :wink:

Mother:Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Grey Split To Pied Whiteface

male offspring:
13% Pied Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
13% Pied Whiteface Split To {X2: Pearl}
13% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
13% Whiteface Split To {X2: Pearl}
25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
25% Whiteface Split To Pied {X2: Pearl}

female offspring:
13% Pied Split To Whiteface
13% Pied Whiteface
13% Grey Split To Whiteface
13% Whiteface
25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface
25% Whiteface Split To Pied

So it does make sense I have a pied in there, there is one more bub to go who hasn't got a crest yet, the other 4 have all got grey crests.......
It'll be very interesting to see if bub number 6 will have a yellow crest.
If not, than this "yellow crested" fella is the one we are keeping!
We want to keep one and I really want a pied so lucky me :lol:

Thanks Christie!

Thanks for catching my mistake!! I guess I shouldn't try virtual breeding birds when tired! lol The others may be pied too, but may be a lighter pied showing only a little yellow where it shouldn't be, I wouldn't rule it out until you see them all fully feathered.

I can't wait to see what they look like. Like my finches have shown me, you can never be too sure what you are going to get, one will end up throwing you a screwball!! (take a look in finch chat if you want to see what I'm talking about)

From what I'm seeing, you have all normals with one probable pied. Whiteface chicks are born white.

These 3 chicks are albinos, if they were whitefaces only, their feathers would come in grey instead of white. Still, their down feathers are white instead of yellow.

Some other whiteface offspring showing white down...

By Noah's breeder, he is split whiteface. Do you know if one of his parents was a whiteface? Therefore, he *IS* split whiteface?
Or if one of his parents was split for whiteface? Therefore 50% chance he *is* split whiteface?

If he's not split whiteface, you wont get whiteface offspring. By the calculator, you should be getting 50% visual whitefaces (of some mutation), but then again perhaps this is a "fluke" clutch without any whitefaces? (since in reality, genetics are much more random than a calculated result!)

Here's the results if Noah isn't split whiteface...

Mother:Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
Father:Grey Split To Pied

male offspring:
25% Pied Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
25% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
50% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface {X2: Pearl}

female offspring:
25% Pied Split To Whiteface
25% Grey Split To Whiteface
50% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface

thanks Monica, do you know I am finding this absolutely fascinating :D
I was never any good at Biology at school :? and we had to do genetics in that subject (I grew up in Holland so bit different over there....) and I hated it!
But these birdies with their (unknown) background are absolutely fascinating me :)

To be honest Monica, the breeder just said he was split for whiteface so I have no idea really :?
Never saw his parents........
With Meg she has a big white patch on the back of her head so was told that she would be split for pied and since Noah has white feathers on the back of his head I only assumed he must be too......
Getting one yellow crested bubby surprised and delighted me :D
So whiteface chicks are white huh, shame :oops: was really hoping for some whitefaces so I guess Noah is not really split for whiteface then, what a bummer :(

Ah well, one more bub to go, can't see the colour of his/her crest yet, here's hoping it's going to be yellow :lol:
We will be keeping the other one for sure, how on earth do you work out the sex of a pied chick????
