I got a note from a friend yesterday, and she used to post on here quite often. Anyhow, I had mentioned the fact that Shelly is constantly eating poop, her own as well as others, fresh, dried out, etc. Gross any way you look at it. Anyhow, the "cure" is to sprinkle about 1/8 tsp of brewers yeast over their food, and feed it to them for about 2 weeks. The brewers yeast contains choline, which is what poop contains. Can any of you confirm this, and are there any possible side effects of the brewers yeast? Janet is a vet-tech, so I trust her statement, but still like to expand on this info if there are any of you who can confirm.

Wouldn't adding any additional type of yeast to their food prompt them to get a yeast infection of some type??

Not necessarily... I don''t know what is exactly in brewers yeast, but I'd suspect that there would be nothing in it that would create additional problems. It's sure worth a try to get her to stop eating poop, as she's eveidently missing something in her diet.

Wow, it's that bad with the poop eating huh? Woody does this too, but he doesn't do it all the time...he seems to go through periods of time when he does it, then he will stop for a while, and he hasn't been doing it all lately. I'd like to know if your idea works too and if it's ok to give to them, I would try it with Woody.

Once in a while if Rosie finds dried poop she will try to eat it. She don't even go near fresh poop and we are pretty much behind her all day long cleaning up her poop so it's not very often that she does encounter it but when she does she tries to eat it too and that grosses me out.. I hope that works for you.. I have never heard of brewers yeast either.

Some other suggestions I've heard... providing a mineral or iodine block or cuttlebone... Brewers yeast that is used as a supplement is not "live" and is not related to candida, which is what causes yeast infections. That's at least what I got, although an avian vet thinks otherwise (although there is a lot of misinformation out there, as well as bad vets)
I'd suggest trying the minerals (mineral water? mineral block, shaved perhaps and put over fresh foods?), cuttlebone (shaved and put over fresh foods? or a liquid calcium for the birds?), or extra vitamins (there's a lot of bird specific vitamins out there!) first, before the brewers yeast, although supposedly the brewers yeast contains protein, iron, and calcium. You could always try some other items such as cod liver oil, and probiotics...

I too have read that brewer's yeast contains no live yeast. As I posted when you asked a few weeks ago, I gave it to my cockatiel flock for a couple years and never had any yeast problems whatever:

And BTW it was a breeder here on UAS who suggested this, while others nodded in agreement, leading me to believe it was a common and well-known remedy.

Perhap the birds are lacking vitamen B(?) I know brewers yeast is loaded with vitamen B and maybe the birds are eatting the poop because they are missing some vitamen(?)Maybe by giving them organic brown rice would help.
