My tiels are cannibals

Postby kneener on Sun Aug 24, 2008 11:09 pm

Has any one had this problem? I have one pair of breeders that eat the wings clean off the babies. It's horrible. I know it's the male primaraly. But I've seen the female with blood on her beak. They were in a flight cage and I moved them into a different private cage. Thinking it might be a jealousy thing. But they did it again. When the babies started to hatch ( for the 3rd time, this is a new pair) I moved him into another cage and the hen feeds them out beautifully. I don't know another way to prevent this or why they do it to begin with. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried repairing the birds? I heard of one pair who plucked their chicks. The pair was separated, given new mates, and the problem was solved! If that doesn't work however, then the pair should be retired from breeding (even though they are knew parents!)

OMG that is awful..so the babies have NO wings?????Are they OK?
When my tiels started plucking and pecking the babies I removed them right away. The male was especially aggressive towards the lutinos. It started witha few pecks and it got increasingly worse..

There was a post about a year ago from someone who had adopted a tiel with no wings. If I recall correctly, it was also a situation of daddy being mean. Sad.

Please retire that daddy  You REALLY don't want to pass his genes along. Just not a good idea for so many reasons. This is your responsibility since you're the keeper. Please don't let him parent another clutch.

I agree, the male needs to be retired. Everything I've seen and read, once a bird starts to mutilate the chicks, there is virtually nothing you can do to make it stop. Sometimes this is a result of bad genes and it will be passed down to any surviving chicks.

Could it be that they are not getting enough protien? A conbination of rice and beans majes a good protien! I would try that. Either that or give them eggs and chicken.
