Eggs, again

Postby bubbabird85 on Wed Aug 06, 2008 8:42 pm

Again, I have annabelle laying eggs... I finally just boiled it and let her have one, and she is sitting on it and is threatening death if you come near her... when will it pass?!?!?!?!? How long before she abandons the egg? I think she has another coming tomorrow, as she feels heavier than Casey (who is now up to a whopping 95 g, and remember, when I got him, he was not even 75). She is normally also about 95 g, I can tell by feel without even weighing her, she has another one a brewing! I have some left over prescription vitamins from Bubba a couple years ago, that still have not gone past their expiration date, so I have been supplamenting her water with that along with her usual cuttle bone to make sure there is no calcium deficiency. Little brat.... lol.

Jackie,

There's no reason to be scared of a 'tiel laying eggs... it's what they do, just like chickens :) Why not let them have a clutch of chicks.. it would be a great thing for Annabelle to have chicks, and most likely would change her personality for the better, and make her a little more mature. Missy's egg laying after the 2nd clutch sure made her more mature, but shs still likes to play with the kids in the floor or other places. If she's flighted and good and active, you shouldn't have to worry about egg binding or problems with eggs. Since she laid one and is in the verge of another why are you boiling them? They aren't fertile, and boiling does change the color of them and they know it.. they not dummies :)

Why should I prevent chicks, let me count the ways, lol....

1) Annabelle and Casey have a high likelihood of being siblings
2) I cannot afford to hatch chicks
3) I cannot afford the time to feed them if their immature parents decide not to.

soooo many reasons. There is also a possability that they are firtile, as they are together, and I prefer not to allow them to develop before boiling, that just seems kinda cruel to me. She doesn't seem to mind the color change, as she is still sitting on the egg and threatening me if I come near.

Awww, she protecting her egg like a good mamma! I'm sorry that you're the one gets stuck dealing with the egg laying. It's not fair, huh? I got the "good" hen......no eggs here.....and woody and boss are together and although mating hasn't been going on lately that I know of, there sure has been alot of it in the past! I guess it's just one of those things......some lay eggs even without a mate, then there's Boss who has a mate and doesn't lay......I lucked out! at least so far! I pick her up every day and give her kisses and tell her what a good girl she is!!! Maybe she's just trying to make up for all the grey hairs she gave me from all the broken blood feathers and wall crashes!

Yours isn't the only non egg laying hen Kim. I remember how worried you were when you realised that Boss was female. Then we had our talks about how to prevent egg laying with attention, lack of nesting sites, regulated lighting and rearranging the cage on a regular basis.

I'm now going on something like 5 years since we had out eggs, and I gave them the nestbox.

Casper is still a young birdie (a year in April), but I was hoping for many years of egg-free days also!

Casper is only a year old?? Wait.. I thought you had Caper before I had Rosie?? I will have Rosie for 2 years in Feb and when I bought her Michelle told me she was about 4 months old so that makes her bday in Oct so she will be 2yrs old this Oct.. Now I'm confused..

Christie, did I read right that if you give your babies attention that they will not lay eggs?? I hope Rosie continues to not lay eggs, just thinking about it scares me..

change in enviornment makes me laugh... I went on a couple weekend trips, and my parents bird sat for me... she was "developing" the eggs inside her when she was with my parents, and laid them when i broght them home... completely different enviornment, inside cage and out, and had no effect, each time, I brought them home, and she laid an egg that night.

That is only part of it. Attention with my hen involves flying and playing, not hands on time as she hates being touched. When I'm messing with their cage, I don't let her just sit, I make sure that she is flying and exploring, in a sense keeping her very active.

If you're cuddling and petting your bird, you will be causing her to be more hormonal if you are touching the wings, vent area, and back. This is very stimulating to them.

As long as you aren't encouraging egg laying, you should be fine. Egg laying is scary, but it is natural. As long as birds have a healthy diet and pleanty of exercise, they should be fine. When not trying to breed though, it can be inconvienent!!

Also, so I'm not posting on several threads, about Rosie tasting food. You need to give it to her more than just once. Birds are naturally wary of anything new. A new food needs to be presented many, many times before they are sure you're not trying to poison them.

My oldest tiel finally tried carrots a few months ago after 19+ years of offering them to him. Persistance is the key. If you spoil her too much, then she will only eat her favorite foods and not have a balanced diet. If it is a people food, you eat it too in front of her. This will help.
