Has anyone had this happen?

Postby julie3512 on Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:35 pm

hi everyone,
i have 3, 7 week old cockatiels. mom and dad taught them to fly in the last two weeks. today one of the babies took off on its own slammed into the wall it was going pretty fast.(my bird room is 30 ft x 30 ft ) i cant see any broken anything but there is blood coming out the nostrils...i did get ahold of a vet , he said there was nothing i could do for it that it probably wont make it throught the night. this little one has quite a bit of fight in it..i have it in a small bird carrier, he just acts stunned(or drunk in appearance, he cant seem to keep his balance). has anyone ever had this happen and what has the outcome been? i put some food in my hand and he ate it, put some water in front of the baby and it drank the water. any suggestions anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. i am so careful not to have fans etc. running in the bird room and this happens i feel horrible :( i am just hoping he pulls through and is ok despite what the vet says

I have had my parrotlet crash in to the window, he seems ok, though parrotlets are a little nutty to begin with.

Get a hold of another vet. This bird may have a concussion or a fractured keel. If you can't get him in tonight, keep him calm and quiet. Make sure he continues eating and drinking. For the next several weeks, make sure he is kept calm and limit flight, another crash could be deadly.

Here are the vets in your state. http://aav.org/vet-lookup/locate-vet2.p ... _string=oh

Get him to another vet immediately!! Yours should take him in and get him in an incubator and have him supervised. I can't believe your vet offered to do nothing!!! Keep him warmer than usual--his body won't have to work so hard to stay warm. keep him eating and drinking, but most importantly get him to an emergency vet NOW!!!!

Best of luck, I will keep your little guy in my thoughts and prayers!

Babies this young usually don't have the power to do themselves such harm. Let's hope his looks worse than it actually is and he's back to normal after a night's sleep. Unless he's fully weaned, you probably don't want to leave him with a vet who'll be too busy to feed him as regularly as you would. Besides keeping him warm, there's not a lot to be done for this type injury other than wait and hope.

unfortunately i have a very uncaring bird vet. he is the closest in my area. he has always been great.... the last few times i have had to use him he has been very very rude! first time i thought oh he was having a bad day but after today it infuriated me..i have heard other bird people in the area have problems with him but i have never had any problems at all until now....well other than the vet bill i dont think i have ever walkedout of his office with less than a 200.00 dollar bill but i didnt care because my birds were being taken care of...ihave him in in a very quiet place. i will contact one ofthe vets on the list and see what can be done. thank you all for all the good info and the vet names.

Julie, i think finding another vet is a great idea. I have called a vet at 11 pm for an emergency (not as much as yours) and she called me back immediately--she has a voice mail service that calls her with emergencies. Anyway, if you are displeased, go find another. I have recently moved from Cleveland to Toledo and back to Cleveland again. I found a great vet in Toledo, and will drive to her twice a year to care for my bird with liver problems just because she is the best of the best--I would spend the gas money... go se someone you are comfortable and confident with... for non-liver issues, I see the local vet, doesn't know as much, but he is avian certified, and he will do for the every day stuff. He also is very kind and always curtious, and a good vet! Good luck.

Flockmom, thanks for the info, but agian--clevland area! thanks anyway!

I hope all does go well, and I would make sure he/she is kept calm and grounded for at least a couple of months. Remember, Sam's darling baby survived a really nasty crash into a window, but a second trauma proved too much. :( :(

Even if you have to clip his/her wings it would be worth it to let the healing process happen. Finishing learning control and how to land can happen later.

Please, keep us informed on what happens and what the vet has to say.

Healing thoughts and love.

Hi everyone,
i was up all through out the night checking on the baby...i woke up at 6:30 to check on the baby again and he had passed away poor little guy...i feel horrible. i am definately keeping a very close eye on the other babies to make sure this doesnt happen again. as much as i hate to i think wings are going to get clipped. if i clip the babies wings will this cause problems later down the road? or is it ok to clip the wings now at 7 weeks old? again thankyou for all the help it is greatly appreciated

I'm very sorry he didn't make it. So sad that a little life is snuffed so early. But it was a freak accident, not the way these things usually happen. Please don't clip the others so young. They NEED to learn to fly right now, at this point in their lives, to develop as healthy cockatiels. To deprive them of this would be cruel, not protective. I've raised MANY cockatiels and never had this tragedy happen. It is very unlikely it would happen to you again.

OMG what a sad story. I am sorry to hear about your baby tiel
That baby had a serious crash. most likely fractured his skull :( maybe he couldn't see.
My tiels flew but it was short flight plopping on the floor. Same with my buaby budgie then one day I found her sitting on the ceiling fan.
good luck with your other babies

I'm so sorry that he didn't make it. :(
I woudn't clip them yet either, the remaining chicks are still learning to fly. Yes, it can cause problems to be clipped too early.

After they have learned to take off and land properly, if you are still wanting to clip, learn about a progressive clip. This is done a special way so they loose flight gradually. I don't know if it can be done easily on tiels, but it would be worth the research.

I am so sorry for the loss of your baby bird. I would also not suggest clipping at such a young age, they are still developing muscle for flight and need to work them. I purchased 2 clipped birds, and they still ran into the wall with a lot of foce because they could not manouver... they are better after becoming full-flighted and getting some practice.
