How long do your females sit?

Postby mallagoodee on Tue Jun 17, 2008 8:58 am

My single female, Bailey, is sitting on 5 infertile eggs. She'll sit from 5 pm till 9 am, come out, have a poop some food and some scritches. Go back to her eggs from 10:30 am till 4 pm. All tolled, about 21.5 hours.

I'd like to know how long your female, of a couple, sits on her eggs. Does Bailey sit for a disproportionate amount of time, as a single, or is this just about right, even for a couple?

Thanx
Pete

I only have one pair of tiels, being that 4 are females and 1 is male. I don't breed, and I don't encourage any breeding behavior for any of the hens, so I can't "correctly" answer your question... however, within couples their sitting times may vary... As a single hen Bailey may be sitting on the eggs for the right amount for *HER*...

Hi Pete,

Cappy, my nine year old hen just finished sitting on 3 eggs, and she would sit them constantly except for feeding herself. Sometimes I'd have to force her off the eggs to eat, but she'd come right back to them as soon as she ate. None were fertile, so I was not worried that they would hatch. When the other kids found her "nest" which was behind a door in the den, they started harassing her and she'd attack when they got too close. As for the time your girl is on the eggs, it sounds about right. You can look for her to finally give up around 3-4 weeks, perhaps later if nothing is disturbing her. One thing to watch is her weight. If she's not eating enough, she could lose a good bit of weight in a very short time.

that sounds about right.

my hens always sat much more than the males - the guys were more of a "break time" sitter, just enough time for the hen to pop out, poop, eat a bit, and stretch her wings. Then they went back to guarding. If there were more than 3 eggs, though, the males sat much, much more.
