behavior change

Postby bostonbudgie on Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:39 am

My tiels are all good and will step up right away. recently "Fresh Baby" (I hand raised her from an egg) flies away from me and will not step up(?)
At first I thought she was afraid of my tshirt (I wear a tshirt witha parrot logo on it for work) and then I thought she might be afraid of me since I have to give Button her meds every night or maybe she smells other animals on me (I'm a pet sitter). She doesn't do this with my husband.
This new avoidance behavior is fairly new.She will fly away from when I am ready to put her back in the cage when I have to go to work. Lately she will only land on me when she wants to poop! I am trying to figure out why (?)
Any ideas?

Awwww, well.....at least your still good to poop on! Woody does this to me all the time, but at least I know with him and Boss that they do this because they are so darn scared someone is going to seperate them! But sometimes ya just never know what these little birdies are thinking! they are hard to figure out sometimes! Luckily none of mine have really tried to confuse me too much, they pretty much stay predictable!

May be it's a touch of seperation anxiety! Particularly in the case of her flying away from you when you try to put her in her cage as you are getting ready to leave. Does she do it all the time regardless of what's going on? Have you tried putting her in her cage and then tell her how good she is and give her a treat? If she only goes in when she is about to be seperated from you she may just be trying to avoid you leaving!

This is the dog trainer coming out in me; but have you tried putting her in her cage, then letting her back out again for a reward? If she always associates going into the cage as you leaving her for a period of time then it makes sense that she would want to prolong that happening. If she knows that there is a good chance she will be allowed back out then she will be more likely to go in.

Yes, I have done that (taken her out again after putting her in) but then she flies away again!
I also kiss her head and talk nicely to her when I finally get her on my finger.
It is frustrating because it will take close to 30 minutes to get her back in the cage. I will get frustrated and aggravated but I try not to let it show because it just makes the situation worse.
I think i need to try the treat method and reward her with some millet rather than just the praise and see how that goes :?

I had thought about what could have brought Fresh baby's change in behavior. I thought about MY behavior and realized that Eddie and Button hog most of my attention!
Fresh Baby has also been getting on the high perch and what seems deliberate: pooping on Button!
So yesterday, I took Fresh Baby out first to give her attention one-on-one. At least she came out for me. I want to catch this "avoidance behavior" before it got worse.

Amazing...
I go to "Fresh Baby" first, take her out, talk to her and give her kisses and she back to her normal self.
I guess that is why she was being a brat. She was just letting me know that she wanted to be the queen bee :)
She is a spoiled little princess. If she looked like a human she would look like Paris hilton! ha ha! :P
