Eddie scissor has a vet appointment

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Jun 03, 2008 6:35 pm

My little Eddie has a scheduled check up vet appointment.
She has been laying eggs so I had cancelled her appointment that she had over a month ago.
Well, she laid another egg just recently but what is odd in her behavior lately is when she grooms i.e. her back she screams. At first i thought it was just senstive pin feathers coming in.She is not plucking feathers but when she touchs her own back she screams. I checked it for broken feathers or skin ifrritations but I found nothing.
I am worried something is amiss in her reproductive area causing her distress. I've upped her calcium intake, fresh veggies and sun-light, hoping it will help.
Regardless, thursday she has a vet visit because this screaming has been going on for too long and it is getting worse.

Eddie had her appointment (and I brought Button along too). Button's health is improving and she was not stressed at all going to vet. She has gained some weight which is good (103 grams!)
Eddie was in good health however the area she was picking at looked to be an ingrown or broken follicle. the doctor tried to remove it but could not unless she did surgery. Eddie was screaming! it was terrible so I have to put warm compresses on it and give her meloxicam. My poor little Eddie..... :(

Eddie will be on the meloxicam for a week so far she hasn't picked at her back. I do have to try to put a warm compress on her back today .
yup, Button seems to be doing better. She eat the harrison's and I think the milk thistle is helping.
*On another note, carl (the throwing up budgie) needs .2ml of amphorecin 2 x a day. .2ml seems like an awful lot to give to a budgie. it took me 15 minutes to slowly give carl the meds. It is too risky to have to undergo a crop flush (he is 10 years old) so we are trying this since he may have gastric yeast. (His vomit smells sour so that is the tell tail sign) the Apple cider vinegar didn't work on him so now he is on antibotics.
**I go absolutely nuts when I read about bird owners who do not properly care for their birds by not providing vet visits etc.. :x .I put money aside for these "what if" times. Maybe I am a "neurotic bird mommy" but I rather spend money properly caring for my birds than on other things.

I admit, I sometimes don't keep up with the normal check-up kind of things......but if any of my birds showed the smallest sign of anything wrong----off to the vet we would go! I figure I know my birds well and I know if something is out of the ordinary----I pay pretty close attention! The time I found Boss with that blood spot on her chest area I freaked! I was running around, trying to find the vet number, calling work to say I'd be late! I wasn't going to risk anything with her health and I didn't really have a clue what had happened and why that spot was there. Now that I know Boss alot better, I think I would realize with her, with her flying problems that she tends to get injuries-----but still, that injury was a pretty good one and a good size and vet thought antibiotics were needed to prevent infection. I don't know how anyone could not take their birds to the vet if they know something is wrong, or even suspect!

Its great to hear that button is doing better, poor little Eddie tho I hope that she don't have to have the surgery to correct that follicle and Carl *sigh* your poor birdies have such bad luck.

I get upset with people who don't take their birds to the vet too.. I don't always have extra money laying around to just run out to the dr all the time cuz I am one of those people who pretty much live check to check. So becuase of that I have Rosie her little savings account so that if god forbid something happens that she needs to see the dr and I am broke she has money to go to the dr. Because she is my baby and the reason I get up out of bed every morning. I just hope and pray that I am able to always be able to have her, her own money for emergencies..

I will admit I go overboard for my birds. Eddie is fine but I just fuss over her. I think most of Button's problems are genetic so between meds and perfect nutrition, exercise, some sunshine & cleanliness I am doing everything possible for her.
Some of the problems my birds have (i.e. Carl )is because he was a rescue bird so he came with some visible and latent issues.
I thought I had almost killed Carl with the meds. It is so stressful (for the both of us) to give him .2ml of meds twice a day. So I was posed with the dilemma : Do I continue to give it to him and possibly kill him from stress or do I stop and he may die from this crop issue?
I decided to put the meds in his water and change it continuously so nothing else gets in the water.
He seems OK so this may be the best way for him :?
