Gagging?

Postby Mark Janjigian on Tue Jun 03, 2008 1:12 pm

Hey folks.

My tiel, Bianca, has been squaking with her mouth wide open and her tongue sticking out. I don't think anything's stuck in her throat because it's been happening over the past few days. She seems ok otherwise. Any ideas what's going on?

Mark

Well, the first important thing to do when you notice a change in behavior is call the vet--birds are good at hiding illness, and if you see a change, best to call the vet and ask if not make an appointment. My vet does phone consults like that no charge. My thoughts are could be regergitating, or maybe stressed and breathing strangely--my bird has done the same when it was too hot--cooled him down with AC, and he was fine.

Bessed of luck,

It is most likely regurgitation.
However, my tiel "Button" was doing that quite frequently and it turned out she had a yeast infection. Her throat was raw and irritated so she was retching trying to get some relief.

Hey folks,

I really appreciate the prompt responses. This is a great community of genuine people. I've lurked for awhile and even posted from time to time. I learned a lot from everyone here. Unfortunately, I won't be here for a while.

I followed your advice and took Bianca to the vet. Today was the first available appointment and I thought the crisis was over as things had mellowed since my post. I called to ask when I could pick her up only to find out that she had died 10 minutes ago.

I'm kind of in shock right now. I got caught off guard. Damn.

Anyway, thanks again for your input. I'm going to miss her.

Sorry, you did your best for her. You would have felt bad had you not taken her to the vets. If they cant save her no one can. Has the vet said what it was? :(
