night frights

Postby mytielwoody on Mon Jun 02, 2008 4:15 pm

Last night we turned on the ceiling fan after the birdies were turned in for the night-----it was late and we fell asleep on the couch.....next thing ya know I hear flapping coming from woody and boss's cage.....I thought I knew immediately what was causing this fright------some newspapers I have around on the floor started blowing when we turned on the fan and they were in front of woody and boss's cage, so I lifted up the cage cover and here's Boss clinging the front door of the cage! I opened it up and held her for a little while and neither of them seemed to overly scared so I returned her and covered them and moved the newspapers. About 20 minutes later, more flapping! geez! same thing again, only this time I held each one and put them back in their spot where they sleep. After I set them down, it was the funniest thing......the two of them were leaning over and looking down very intently, like something down there was going to get them! So now what......I turn off the fan! problem solved!
These two have both been very good when it comes to night frights, so when they have them, I guess it kinda surprises me! Last night was the first time I have ever heard Boss hiss! I remember once before I shined a flashlight underneath their cage and this caused a fright also......I was looking to see if there was a mouse in the mouse trap! so it seems whenever something moves underneath their cage is what will cause a night fright-----nothing else seems to though-----funny birds, even with the newspapers moved, maybe the ones on the bottom of their cage were moving from the fan, so I guess no fan on at night unless I put something on their papers so they don't make noise or move!

That sounds like a very probable cause that would initiate a night fright (russeling newspaper, possible mice walking around, flash lights, and fan blowing around!)
Speaking of fans, what ever you do do not let the birds out when the over head fan is twirling around. I have known at least two people who lost their cockatiels from the rotating fan..
just a word of caution :o

Our ceiling fan is never put on during the day, only at night after birdies are sleeping! .....and now, maybe not even then! lol

I have thought of leaving the ceiling fan on at night for Rosie too because it is SOOOo hot here and we don't have our a/c hooked up yet. But I was afraid it wouldn't be good for the fan to be on while she's sleeping as I don't cover her cage.

Poor babies they were so scared. awww :(
