Early mating

Postby chibi-tori on Sun Jun 01, 2008 11:41 am

I've been taken completely by surprise at the attempted mating of some of my chicks :( I discovered a few days ago, Daisy and Bandit (now Bandy) have been mating occasionally with their brothers! I happened to catch them on the rope and am still kinda shocked they have started so young. Daisy and Bandy are both only 4 months old. I know they can reproduce in the first year, but dang.. that's getting a bit too young. I'm either gonna have to expand the gene pool or start some kind of reduction program to keep them from interbreeding. Anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps trading birdies???

    Sam,

I don't want to hear about expanded gene pools.

I don't want to hear about reduction program.

Ooh, this might be a good chance to start a little cockatiel community with other people who have the same interests! Have you checked around your community with some other 'tiel lovers?

No, actually I don't know any other person who even has 'tiels, but I'm sure there are many. I've met a few folks while searching for Chibi and out of all the people we came across, there was only one lady who said she had one bird. With the number of birds sold by this one breeder I know, they have to be going home with someone. I don't want to get rid of any of the kids, but to prevent any accidental inbreeding, I'm gonna have to do something. As it now stands, I have only 7 females and 7 males. Of those numbers, there are only 4 females that are not related, and just 2 males that are not related. One problem is the females are not interested in making babies, and Pixie will probably never even lay any egg(s). Cappy is not interested in any of the boys, but she has laid 3 eggs and she's still sitting on them. Shelly is wanting to mate, but not with any of the boys... just me ! It seems to be a longer than normal hormonal season, as this has been going on now for over 2 months. Perhaps I need some motivation to make changes or something.. I'll just have to work it out somehow.
