My 5 year old is sort of like that too. He's been cagebound ever since we got him about 2 years ago, and I have to force him to come out of the cage if I want to mess with him. We're pretty sure he was a neglected, possibly an abused bird. It's been a long hard struggle for me to even be able to touch him without a really bad bite, but the clothes closet in the dark did wonders, as well as persistance. He's not one to play with the others either. I just hope one of the females now will take to him, and he will respond with something other than his typical squawk which sounds like "leave me alone". He too does enjoy being out in the sun and wind, but he's full flighted, so the cage is absolute. I did have a gazebo that was screened in during the summer, and I'd take him out there and let him enjoy freedom, and he seemed to like it. Next summer, I'll do the same, but hopefully, without the bother of any cage at all with a different awning / screen room.

I don't allow Cricket to be cage bound, he'll get worse if he is. For Cricket, he's not been neglected, I've had him since 8 weeks. He is a normal grey male & they do have a reputation for being like that no matter how hard you try to turn them around. Cricket is pretty social with people & talks alot but he prefers to be left alone 99% of the day. He never likes to play with toys. I won't give him a mirror because it makes his attitude worse.

Smokey is worse than anything I've ever seen about being a "loner". He's a whiteface gray, and a beautiful bird, but he has the personality of a rock! For a while, he almost got where he would come out of the cage on his own, fly a lap or two around the den / kitchen, then return. After bringing in the new kids, he's reverted to his old grumpy self, not playing with the others, not associating, and pretty much ignoring everything that goes on. There is one female I *think* hs might have a little liking for, but as all are so young, things might change. I'm hoping he'll change too, and quit being so grouchy with her. She and her breeder cagemate have started mutual preening, and the male has already tried mounting her several time. Both are way too young for mating, but can't blame him for trying to bond. I was not aware normal grays had that kind of reputation. Of the 6 kids, none are normal gray, but one is somewhat close. He's never liked being in the cage, and would prefer to be on one of our shoulders or being scritched. I do make Smokey come out and sit with me, or as in the mornings, come in the computer room and sit with me as I read the mail, etc. He also loves for me to play sounds of a crow and a whippoorwil.. His favorite thing is hearing the local crows holler, and will sit sometimes, all day patiently waiting to hear one.
