Is it safe to eat ants?

Postby bidik on Thu May 15, 2008 4:50 am

Recently I realized that there are some ants in the house(although I live in 3rth floor) which are targetting Bidik's food plate... I though he would be scared of them (he is scared of anything non-human) but instead he seemed to like them.... He was watching and tasting them!!...

Then I let him out of the cage and somehow he figured out where the ants were coming from and started to go around eating them... Is he supposed to eat ants???

What would worry me is that that the ants have poison on them (say if you have ant baits (even old ones )around the house the ants walk in them and get poison stuck on them)

Yes, the ants themselves are safe, but they can carry toxins on their feet, depending on where they've been. Are these the small ants that are so sadly common nationwide? If so, they will leave post haste if you sprinkle a little 5% Sevin dust from Home Depot across their path.

There's always a chance that the ants could have something on them that's harmful. However, Jewel got one on the porch a couple of weeks ago and was fine... as with anything a watchful eye is best
