cockatiels and hamsters

Postby cinder on Sat May 10, 2008 1:04 pm

hi! Recently we got a hamster, and I was wondering if it is safe for cockatiels to be around hamsters. I don't think they would act aggressively towards each other, but can the hamster pass on harmful bacteria to my cockatiel or vice versa? Thanks for any help!

There has been articles in the paper about people getting really sick from handling hamsters.
I hope you are not thinking of putting them together?
I think like everything else sanitation is key. Always wash your hands after handling the hamster and his food dishes etc..
I've had hamsters years ago and I had them in an aquarium with a screened cover.

No, I would never put them together, but their cages may end up being in the same room.
I'll make sure to wash my hands after handling the hamster before handling my tiel, though. Thanks for letting me know that people have been getting sick from hamsters, so I'll be extra careful with my cockatiel.

I found that Casper does not like any other animals anyway. Whenever I took my hamsters out, they were not interested in Casper at all. They are more interested in running round. Casper would get spooked by the site of them and head in the opposite direction.

Hamsters are not lovable or friendly by nature. The dwarf hamsters are a bit more friendly, but they are not typically the type of animal that wants to be held and loved. So chances are, they won't stick around long enough for the tiel and the hamster to get along or not get along.
