trichomoniasis/giardia/ protozoa???

Postby bostonbudgie on Wed Apr 30, 2008 7:42 am

I am wondering if there could a possiblity that Button is carrying a protozoa. Her throat is red raw but no bacteria is present and the yeast is cleared. Since she is still picking I am wondering if there is a protozoa present even though the vet said she didn't see any.
Carl (my budgie) throws up constainly. On the budgie post it was suggested he could have trichomoniasis. I brought him to the vet in the neighboring town but they did nothing and charged me a fortune. It is possible he could have tric and may have spread it to other birds. I need to talk to my vet about this. I seem to be banging my head against the wall and I am ready to self medicate my birds by ordering ridzole a (10% ronidazole) used to treat budgies and pigeons for giardia and tric.
Button's liver is compromised so I am bit nervous about doing this :(
I am going out of my *&^%ing mind over this!!!!!!

 I'm so sorry. I can't even begin to imagine how you are feeling going thru this for so long with no results. I have no advice, just wanted to wish you luck and tell you how sorry I am that no one has been able to help your babies :(.

i would be going crazy too, i'm sorry this is so hard. is there another avian vet near you? perhaps a second opinion would be a good idea...

I have treated most of my birds with the ridonazole medicine since we have well water and I was worried about Giardia. Even birds with babies in the nest had no problems. Are you sure you don't just have a lonely male budgie that is regurgitating all over everything?

My initial thought that Carl the budgie is an overly amourous budgie regurgitating. However, I took the mirror out as suggested. He is like a volcono and upchucks almost a 1/2 teas of chunder without any mirror or budgies near him. It is all over him. He is a totally crusty mess. He does this every other day.To me, this is not normal. I took him to a vet nearby and they really didn't do anything and charged me almost $200.00. (I had no confidence with this vet at all. She looked like she was about 12 years old and rap music was blasting. Good God.. shoot me....) That vet suggested Carl had PDD. However the proper diagnosis would be an autopsy (meaning carl would have to be dead first to properly diagnose it)
I talked to a vet from A & M Texas (at the parrot conference)if this was possible. That a budgie could have PDD. He said there has never heard of a budgie with PDD.
Kerry from the budgie forum suggested it could be "tric". When I did a little research on this subject it looks very possible. I am not sure what kind of test is needed whether it is done doing a gram stain or throat culture. I think if I get Carl properly tested for tric and it comes up positive then I bet Button has it.

I treated everyone with the ridzole just in case. On day 2, Carl actually got worse! his vomit smelled sour too. I think Carl has a yeast infection in his crop (like the vet said) so everyone is now treated with apple cider vinegar. The other budgies are gross. when carl throws up they run over and eat it! yucko! So that is why everyone gets treated with the apple cider vinegar....
Button was actually picking more too so I think she still has the apsergillosis and not trichomoniasis like I had feared.
ugh... I am going crazy......
