more on Button

Postby bostonbudgie on Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:15 pm

I took Button in for her follow up vet visit. this time for blood work. She took a blood panel but the blood clotted immediately once extracted so she could not do a CBC.The vet was really distressed that Button's blood clotted up so rapidly. However by looking at her blood panel affecting her heart & liver were sky high. This is not a good thing.
I think the only thing we can do at this point is put her on milk thistle for her liver. What brand and mix does everyone use? I know I can do mail order but I wanted to see what brand people are using for their bird. And what mix?
Plus despite having been on anti yeast meds and baytril her throat was still red raw. :(

Re; blood clotting...

I'm curious as to what your avian vet would think if you tried giving childrens aspirin (81mg), crushed, in 30 cc's water, probably given about .02cc's twice a day? (I wouldn't believe any more than .03 cc's).

The aspirin would help keep the blood from clotting. Of course, she would have to give you the correct amount to give, if she thinks its worth a try.

My thoughts as well. I give my kids aspirin as needed, but I use 1/4 of a baby aspirin crush it up and dump it into an insulin syringe then suck a little water in so it will flow out. Probably on the order of .04 cc's. I have the formulae for aspirin dosing based on the birds weight, but so far, I've not been able to find it. You might do a web search for dosing but for sure, it's in the avian drug books if you can find one.

Seems like Button is having a hard time getting back to normal or some semblance of it.

As for the seed mix I use, believe it or not, the 3D mix from wally-world contains most everything they will eat, and little of stuff they won't eat. Yes, it's heavy on sunflower seeds, but I have to reiterate, sunflower seeds are not bad for cockatiels because they get so little of the kernel in the first place, and as long as they are eating other stuff along with the SF seeds, I see no harm in it. Nobody is fat, and all seem to be very healthy.

Yup, Button is a mess. I just ordered some milk thistle through the brand Bubba uses "nature's answer"(no alcohol). I'm a little nervous about using aspirin yet since Button's throat is so raw.I would think the acid from the aspirin would irritate her throat more. :?: There is no explanation on why she has a red throat. :?: She was on the diflucan for the yeast and then the baytril for bacteria. You would think thsoe meds would clear up any infections.
At least she is eating right now (rice & harrison's mash)

Button has been eating pretty good. I weighed her today and she put on some weight :D
However, she is still tearing at her skin/feathers with great fury. I hope to get a hold of the vet today to see what else needs to be done :?

I talked to the vet last night on the phone for over a half an hour regarding both Carl the budgie and Button's continuing saga.
I suggested the possibility of both of them having trichomoniasis. She said it was possible but the test, especially for Carl the budgie, was risky since budgies gets stressed so easily. It is a crop wash where the crop is flushed out with warm saline solution. She was a little hestitant due to the risk involved. So I asked if it was Ok to just treat the whole flock prophylactically with ridzol (10% ridzondale) since the side effects are minimal. She thought that was a good idea for now. She said it is more likely Carl has a yeast infection in his crop that is making him vomit since trichomoniasis is more common in pigeons (but budgies can still get it) but to give the ridzol a shot.
So right now this is what I am doing with Button.I am giving her, as well as the rest of the flock, ridzol in their drinking water to clean out any protozoas .I will treat her with the milk thistle to support her liver as soon as I get it in the mail from the company "Nature's way" that Bubba suggested. :) She has a great diet of chopped fresh veggies, rice and harrison's mash.
I spent the entire day scrubbing/disinfecting the cages & toys to kill bugs & germs.
It would be a miracle if this works.
If it doesn't, then Button will have to endure another blood test and Carl will have to endure a yeast test.

Hi Christie - so sorry to hear the problems with Button still going on

Of course I don't know his lineage but is it possible this could be a result of inbreeding?

I know of a family (human) of 2 first cousins getting married. As a result, the children developed some sort of skin dis-order that was not treatable. As far as I know the children all lived well into adulthood. This was many years ago and I don't know what happened to them.

Hugs and kisses to you and Button.

Oh I'm glad you got to talk to the Dr. Did they happen to say about how long it will be before you see any results if the meds are helping Button?? Have you seen a difference yet?? I sure hope so.. Keep us updated!
