3rd Candling ... Very Sad News

Postby 2MANYPETS on Fri Apr 11, 2008 5:22 pm

Hey everyone,

I was able to re-candle Tiki and Tango's Eggs today. I got a really good look at all 5 eggs with an inverted cup and flashlight. I am 99.9% sure that they are all infertile. They look like a normal egg with an air sac and a yolk. There are no visible veins at all. I think what my son and I thought were veins the 1st time that we candled were lines on the eggshell itself. What appeared to be a red glow yesterday was on the 1st egg, it is nothing more than a yolk. This egg had a slight pencil mark left on it and it could not possibly be fertile, as it would have hatched already. I am going to leave the eggs in the box until the end of next week, then I will remove them and the box. My heart is breaking, especially for Tiki and Tango, but it just was not meant to be. I am not going to let them breed again, as they are only seed eaters and are not free flighted. I think it would be best for all of us to not let them go through this again.

Sam,

Thank you so much for all of your encouragment and support, words cannot express how much it meant to me ... you have been wonderful. Good luck with your beautiful flock and I hope Chibi comes home to you someday.

Blessings,
Lori

don't chuck the eggs..yet.
I had the same situation regarding betty's 12 eggs. I was ready to toss the eggs after 30 days and then that morning one hatched....
Wait a few more days......

Lori,

I'm so sorry the great event did not happen, and I know how badly you must feel. Yes, some things are just not meant to be, and while I was pulling for you, Tiki & Tango, they will most likely want to try again, and I'd certainly let them. I would consider letting their flight feathers grow out, as they will really need to be able to fly once they have chicks. As for the current clutch of eggs, I'd leave them until they no longer sit on them, or they might just try for another clutch right away, which would not be good. At this stage, if any of the eggs were fertile, they should have already hatched, or in the case of the last egg, you would be able to tell immediately if it were developing, as the inside would be very dark. At any rate, once they leave the eggs, which might take a week or more, then you can toss the whole thing, and they probably won't try to lay more right away.

I appreciate the kind words, and it gives me great pleasure to pass along what I know about our kids.

Hugs...

Sam
