Two males?

Postby tikobean on Wed Apr 09, 2008 3:01 pm

We applied to adopt a 7 year old male 'tiel from a local bird rescue. Before we make a definate decision, I want to make sure we get the best companion for Boomer. Will two adult males get along? Do you think the new bird's age could be a problem? Could it be possible to keep them caged together in the future? I would appreciate any advice on introducing a new bird to the family! Thank you!
Proudly owned by 3 spoiled cats (Tiko, Shadow, and Cleo) and 1 feisty cockatiel (Boomer).

Well, I have two males (10 and 1 1/2) and a female. Bubba, the 10 year old, had been an only bird for a long time, and has no interest in the others. They have, however, generally gotten along okay, until recently. Casey is ready to breed with Annabelle, and has gotten aggressive to Bubba, so I split them all up into separate cages. But, without Annabelle, I dont' think there would be a problem. Some thoughts:

- make sure the cage is big enough if you plan to keep them together, but have an extra in case they don't get along. I have a large flight cage, and 2 smaller single tiel cages.
- if you have a large cage already-re-arrange it so there are no dominance issues--so your current baby will not think of the cage as much as "his"

hope this helps,

Jackie

I have 2 males and they get along beautifully. They are close to a year apart in age and it did take them a while to get used to each other, but now they are inseparable. I do think it depends on the bird though. Mac is my gray that was found outside and he has not bonded to me 100% but LOVES other birds and has bonded to Sammy. Sammy was adopted and was an only bird in his previous home. He bonded to me soon after I brought him home but is now closer to Mac.

I adopted Mac when Sherwin was still alive and Sherwin was around 10-15 years old. He never accepted Mac and remained bonded to only me.

When I first brought Sammy home, he was in a separate cage and Mac wanted Sammy to be in his cage so badly that there were no dominance issues at first. However, they did appear after Sammy got used to being in the same cage with Mac. They do have spats from time to time but it's nothing I worry about. They work it out and wind up preening each other 10 minutes later.

Good luck!!

Rest in peace Sherwin! You will always be loved.
