Is this normal?

Postby mallagoodee on Wed Apr 09, 2008 11:53 am

I wondered if this is normal.
Bailey seems to growing a necklace of orange feathers. I hope you can see it, around her beak, and just a hint around the bottom of her neck and she's even growing 'em on the upper sides of her head.

Now, she's just starting a moult, and I've noticed these new colours for about 3 weeks now.

And, no, it's not from her splashing tomato sauce when she twirls her spaghetti ...

Is it anything to be concerned about?

Thanx
Pete

I don't think it's anything to worry about Pete. It could be from a high level of vitamin A, which will cause colorings to be quite vivid and even expand into areas not normally used to that color from the cheek patches. As long as she seems normal, I'd not give it a 2nd thought.

Sometimes it can be from a toy getting wet, or other orange foods...

However, I have seem a couple pictures with cockatiels that have "orange freckles", which are the same color orange as the cheek patches... no explanation why, really, thus no need for concern.

Color

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed Apr 09, 2008 3:48 pm

I have a pink chalk-type of perch in Casper's cage. For a little bit, the top of her head and her chest were pink. It was rather cute! I had a pink cockatiel.

But anyway, you have a gorgeous gorgeous birdie. Wow...love that yellow!!!!

Thank you all very much!
I can rest easy again.

She doesn't play with toys at all, but has been gnawing on an orange coloured mineral 'disk', which is what I thought she might be brushing against, but nope, the new colouration isn't just on the surface of her feathers, it's the feathers themselves.

Once again, thanx a lot!
