When weight becomes a problem.

Postby chibi-tori on Tue Apr 08, 2008 8:18 am

I've never been able to weigh Suzie very often since she was a chick, but I got the opportunity yesterday to get her on the scales. Before I put her on the scales, I felt around her breast, and she felt really "plump". Turns out once she got on the scales, her weight was 109 grams! I thought WOW! She's got a lot of meat on her bones... She's not to the point of having any indentation over the keel, and I could not really tell she has lots of yellow fat under her skin, but that kind of weight does concern me. Suzie, like all the rest of the kids are extremely active, flying all over the house, and such, so I'm not too worried she'll actually put more weight on, but I suppose it's still possible. What does the collective thoughts of the group think about this situation? Of course, I'll have to start keeping closer tabs on her, and while it could be that she's fixing to start laying eggs, I certainly hope that's not the case. Missy would bounce between 95 and 103 grams while she was in laying mode, with a 5 gram increase just prior to her laying another egg. Suzie is much larger in bone size than some of the others, and is similar in build as Missy.

Thoughts?

Sam

She does sound a bit plump, but I would not be too concerned if it isn't going over her keel or if you can't visibly see yellow fat under her skin. I would ask your vet about normal weight... as it seems that she may fall in a "normal" range... but again, still a bit plump. Lafaber makes some avi-cakes for weight control (they come in a blue bag rather than in the red bag). Bubba is on them to help his liver problems... not because he is overweight (at about 92 grams give or take). Ask your vet if these might be appropriate for her.

It's the same thing with Boss, she weighs 109 as well, at least the last time I weighed her. She also is quite active, but I do worry that she may be overweight, especially when I heard the one vet who clips her refer to her as fat! he called her "fat and happy"

To me, that sounds like a normal weight especially if she exercises.
Button weighed 122grams. She is down to 108 but I feel she is kind of on the thin side now. Sometimes during "breeding' season the female WILL store fat in liver for egg production. (This is what one of my vet's told me when Lucille started gaining weight. Sure enough, 3 weeks later she was laying eggs.

Sunshine being the heaviest weighs about 120 grams... her mother probably weighs 98-106 grams... Even at 100 grams, she's chubbier than Casey if she were to be 105 grams... reason why, Casey exercises! So does Sunshine, but she's just chub, where-as Casey has a good amount of muscle... and being that Kiwi can't fly, well she's just pudgier because of it.

Cockatiels usually weigh between 75-120 grams. A normal range is usually about 85-105 grams..... what might be a good weight at 90 grams however could be underweight for another.... so when 110 grams is about right for one tiel it could be quite overweight for another.... Just depends on the fat to muscle ratio, and how much the bird eats and exercises.
