Strawberries

Postby Rosies Mommy on Sat Apr 05, 2008 4:54 pm

I bought strawberries today and Rosie really liked them. She didn't eat much of the inside but she sure did love picking out and eating all the little seeds on the outside of it.. Shes so cute! After she ate it she got all hyper too she started running around and peeping and had bundles of energy.

Ahhh

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Apr 07, 2008 11:10 am

You got her to eat strawberries!!! Wow!!

Ok, that brings up a question that I have never really thought to ask.

How do tiels know the difference between veggies and fruit by just looking at them? Most tiels won't eat fruit, but how do they know they don't like it even without trying it? I mean, there are some fruits that kind of look like the veggies we feed them.

Hmmmmmm, anyone know?

It's an arbitrary distinction to begin with -- there's no clear line between "fruits" and "vegetables": They are culinary distinctions, not biological ones (although the word "fruit" can also be a biological term). Citing the Wikipedia article on the subject,
Wikipedia wrote:The word "vegetable" is a culinary term, not a botanical term. The word "fruit" on the other hand can be a culinary term or a botanical term.

Botanically speaking, fruits are fleshy reproductive organs of plants, the ripened ovaries containing one or many seeds. Thus, many botanical fruits are not edible at all, and some are actually extremely poisonous. In a culinary sense however, the word "fruit" is only applied to those botanical fruits which are edible, and which are considered to be a sweet or dessert food such as strawberries, peaches, plums etc.

In contrast to this, a number of edible botanical fruits, including the tomato, the eggplant, and the bell pepper are not considered to be a sweet or dessert food, are not routinely used with sugar, but instead are almost always used as part of a savory dish, and are salted. This is the reason that they are labeled as "vegetables".

In other words it is quite legitimate for a plant part to be scientifically referred to as a "fruit", even though it is used in cooking or food preparation as a vegetable.

Since we define things as "fruits" or "vegetables" based on flavour and usage, it wouldn't be surprising if, for instance, "fruits" generally tasted and smelled sweeter.

Tale of a Veggie / Tale of a Fruit

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:01 pm

:?
Ok, so after all that...does that mean that it is the smell or the look of the "object" that they don't like from the get-go?

Well, when it comes to the birds, I have no idea! The only point I can make is that we use arbitrary criteria like smell and taste to divide plants into these categories. How can we humans tell "fruits" and "vegetables" apart? I can only guess that birds have the same criteria available.

Fruit or Veggies

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Apr 07, 2008 12:16 pm

I usually tell by the sign over the item in the produce section!!

But I don't think Casper can read yet, so I want to know what her secret is...maybe she is just like I was when I was a kid...if I didn't like the way it looked, I didn't even try it!!!

Yeah, I was eating them and she was with me and she went right at it. I read all the time that tiels don't like fruit but Rosie does. She loves apples, oranges and strawberries. She was eating the little greenery on the strawberry too but she loved those little seeds on the strawberry it was so cute watching her eat it..

Luna tries everything I give her!! I'm in the food business and I HATE picky eaters, and I won't have a picky pet - even if it's a bird!!

When it comes to fruit she eats, apples, pears, cantaloupe (just started) and loves the seeds too! oranges and strawberries.

I don't know if the reason is herself and that's how she is or if it's the way I've fed her from the beginning. Either way I'm pleased with the variety of food she eats. She even tried corned beef a few nights ago!
