Eating their own poop

Postby chibi-tori on Sat Apr 05, 2008 12:11 pm

We've discovered Shelly has been eating her own poop.. yuk! I don't know when this started, and afaik, it's not been going on long, but there has to be something wrong, or she's lacking in something. A quick search of topics on here did not really come up with much, but would have sworn this topic came up some good while back. Any of you out there got any ideas, or have you ever heard of this kind of behavior? Guess it's time for the vet-check and maybe he can fill me in..

From what I remember it is usually started by lack of vitamins and protein. I agree, a full work up at the vet is in order since you don't know what her history is like.

I have caught Rosie doing that from time to time. Grosses me out!! But when the dr did all her blood tests everything came back just fine, although I never mentioned that to her.

Woody does this too, and I often wondered why----he used to do it when I first got him, then for a while it seemed as though it stopped for a while, or maybe just didn't happen often, and a few months ago I noticed he was looking for the poop----gross! It started happening again right at the same time Woody started chewing the perches----one perch he likes to chew on and it is flat on top of it now because he has chewed it all away----was thinking maybe he just doesn't like poop on the perches? Not sure why, but he appears to be healthy and happy----I was planning on asking the vet as well when I take Woody and Boss for their next checkup.

I have had birds that do that, I heard is it a Mineral Deficiency?

    poop

Yup some do it because of mineral deficiency but I noticed when my tiels are in breeding mode they do it more especially my females because they are cleaning the (nesting) area. They are trying to get rid of the poop from the area by eatting it.
You will notice when the tiels have babies in a nest box all the poop will be moved to a corner in the box.
