Would this be a bad idea, I'm not sure

Postby Zynx_n_Luna on Wed Apr 02, 2008 7:16 am

I know that bonds take a long time, but Curi still seems to not like me very much, and would it be a bad idea to get another cockatiel that is a lot younger and will bond to me faster to maybe show curi I won't hurt him and so he'll have company?(I know about Corinteening, ugg can't spell it) I also wanted to know should I get a male or a female if this is a good idea?

Remember another bird will cost more money-- in food, toys, and vet bills (that is a big one). You will also need to purchase a second cage for a quarantine period. I have an older bird (i beleive you said curi was 7?) and he is in no way interested in socializing with the other2 young birds... he has, however, learned to play with toys by watching them--but they are not at all really interested in me. If curi is a male, I would not suggest getting a female--you will need to worry about babies.

It's a two part answer....some people say if you get another bird your bird won't want much to do with you (especially if the bird never bonded with you to begin with) because they will bond with each other. If you only have one bird of a type then their flock will be you. But then others say it is mean not to give a bird a companion because birds do flock together!

There's also the chance that the younger bird won't bond with you, either, and that risk may be exacerbated by the presence of another bird for the new one to bond with. I'm not saying "Don't do it!", mind, and for the company aspect it may be a good thing (assuming they get along!), but keep your expectations realistic -- it may not fix anything.

You need to really work with your bird first, spend lots of time and give him lots of love ... don't give up on him yet.

If you get another bird it is doubtful he will ever form a solid bond with you!

If you have tried everything and he still does not bond with you and you can afford another bird ... get him a buddy to keep him company, just be prepared for everthing that goes along with 2 birds. 2 birds are twice the work, twice the mess, twice the noise and most importantly twice the expense period.

    Good Luck,

Patience... I know it is hard... Annabelle still doesn't want much to do with me... I am not allowed to pet her or move within like 3 feet of her, but sometimes hold her, and she will sit on me and preen me. she shows affection in her own way, and I deal... but I would love to pet her and cuddle. I have had her for almost a year.... maybe both of our babies will progress...

    good luck,

    Jackie
