How big is your cage? That is the most important thing about adding another bird. I have a flight cage and have 3 tiels, and sometimes that even seems small... i have 2 males and a female... one male and the female need their space, and don't like to have their space encroached upon by the other... if you have a cage small enough for 1 bird, then you may want to get a new cage-- you can get a flight cage online for around $140... you can also get a second cage for the new bird.

If you have a tiel, I would suggest getting another tiel... they may not get along, but they might be inseparable--who knows. If you have a male, you may want to get another male to avoid breeding, same if you have a female--get another female.

I just read your last post too--if you have only had this guy for a month, you might want to wait to get him a friend, if you want him to bond with you and anyone else in your household. If you get another bird, he might bond to the new bird more than anyone else... maybe wait 6 months or so... Bubba was an only bird for 11 years before he got friends, and he is way too bonded to me to care anything about them... the other two I got at the same time, and bonding with them is hard, because they are bonded to each other.

Even when they are inseparable, it's very true----they hate having the other one in their way or in their space at times! Woody and Boss just love each other, but they beak each other and make this horrible squealing sound when they get in each other's way-----I notice it especially when they are trying to settle in for the night----sometimes they want the same spot and will beak each other and try to shove each other out of the way!

You will need a second cage.

Before introducing the birds in their seperate cages, you will need to run a full 30-60 day quarantine. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT Many birds can carry an illness and not be affected by it until they are stressed, new situations, new homes and meeting other birds can bring out illness. Trust me, vet bills for one are MUCH cheaper than for two. There is no discount for bringing in two birds at once.

Second, what will you do if they don't get along. Not all birds, even of the same species can be friends. In fact, they can kill each other if they don't get along.

Third, what will you do if you end up with a male and female. Are you prepared to prevent breeding? If they do manage to breed, are you able and willing to provide for up to 6 more birds?

All that being said, having multiple birds is wonderful. They do entertain each other, but their bond with you is not nearly as strong as a single bird household. Food goes much quicker, cages must be MUCH bigger, and you need to always have a second cage ready in case they fight or one is ill.

Please go to my site and read the article about protecting your birds through quarantine. It will explain all that you need to do to keep your current bird healthy and safe.
