Heat

Postby Rosies Mommy on Sun Jun 17, 2007 9:23 pm

UGH! We live in NM and it's hot as h3ll here.. Sadly our AC isn't on yet so our house right now is about 82degrees. In teh day we have the ceiling fans on and the windows open. But at night we close them all in the living room where Rosie is.. My concern is that she will suffocate or something in all that heat. But I have also read that your not supposed to leave them in a direct breeze, draft.. So what should I do for my Rosie?? I was thinking of leaving the ceiling fan on but on low for her.. What do you experts think?

Well living in (one of) the hottest country on earth  here's what I do during a hot summer's day........

I close all the curtains/blinds as you will find that windows give off a lot of heat.
I set the a/c on low or on fan only if it's not too bad yet.
That way I will not end up during the heat of the day trying to cool down a hot home but it will be quite pleasant inside that way, not too cold either.
I haven't had a summer with Noah yet but he is in our games room which has an a/c vent so my idea is he should be okay but will try to keep the direct draft of the a/c off him as that's not good either.
Try spraying birdie with plant spray on mist setting to keep him comfy if he does seem to suffer.......
Having a fan near him but not directly on him should be fine I reckon.
Good luck with the heat!

In the birds room it can get up to 90* or higher... being that we have cats (and loose birds now), it's not an option to be able to leave the door open to let the air from the swamp cooler into the room... there are two windows in the room, one that faces east the other faces south. The east facing window the screen was removed and destroyed (for what reasons I do not know), and the south window, the screen was kind of destroyed when a dog jumped to the window knocking the screening mesh out of the frame.... thus I can't really leave the windows open either.

However, I do sometimes end up putting ice cubes in their water, and spritzing them with water (I use cold water... always have). That and sometimes having a fan in there tend to help.... but they actually get used to the heat.

Living in new england, we really don't alot of heat here, at least not that bad. We do get some hot summer days though and some heat waves, but for us a heat wave is when it gets above 90. One thing we do on really hot days is shut the curtains and windows before it starts heating up from the sun----keeps it pretty cool for a while----of course we have a/c so when it gets too warm we just turn on a/c, but before we put in the a/c we got a pretty warm day and I gave my two a bath to cool them down.

Main thing to watch for if you are concerned about heat is birds holding their wings out from body and/or panting. Since birds don't sweat, the only way they can cool themselves is to open mouth and breathe, hold wings out and they also lose heat from their feet. I've had mine in 95 degree outside temps with no ill effects, albeit only for a short time. Just be aware of the signs of overheating.. otherwise, 'tiels can and do well in 90+ degree heat if the change is gradual and they have a chance to acclimate to it.

It's hot here in Texas so we constantly have our A/C running. I also have ceiling fans in every room. I keep the one in the living room where they are on low though. They seem to be fine.
