What do you feed your cockatiel

Postby Buds my bird on Wed Jun 06, 2007 7:32 pm

When I bought Bud, the breeder said he does not feed fruits at all. I have given Bud fruit, but he does not eat it. He is just about 7 months old. He eats at his veggies, loves the corn, but does not gobble of it down, of course, I probably put more in his bowl than he needs. He eats his seed mixed with pellets and he loves his millett (sp).

Any suggestions.

Food

I don't know too many tiels that eat fruit. Casper will pick at my strawberries occasionally, but she mostly eats veggies. I have offered different fruits to her, but she refuses. I wouldn't be concerned if he is not eating fruit. Keep trying a variety of veggies.

Casper loves avi-cakes by Lafeber. Others on here say their birdies eat different pellets. I have never had luck with giving Casper pellets. They are fussy!!!

Luna loves her peas and corn - about 10 or so, a little broccoli, cauliflower, parsnips, carrots, kale - and whatever is on YOUR plate because if YOU have it - it's gotta be better!! The little stinkers!!

Basically stay away from caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, avocados, salty foods, sugary foods, and greasy foods. They eve like hardboiled or scrambled eggs!

Go through the archived posts- there's alot about diet and food.

That is about what Hank does. If you can eat it, so can he. That is his opinion. He prefers to go for my husband's plate, so I bring him his food with instructions as to what Hank can and cannot eat.

Hank sits in the rafters of the drop ceiling kitchen. We took out panels for him. He watches what you take out of the fridge. If it is cold chicken or cheese you can see him leaning way over to get a better look. Then he follows you along the length of the kitchen until you give him some. Also when I am making salad he watches what goes in. He likes to chew on the green leafy vegetables.

Rosie don't eat much fresh food but here are a list of the things that she does love to eat..

Corn, peas, carrots (on ocassion), wheat bread, wheat tortilla, burley wheat, shredded wheat, cheerios, chicken, pork chops (she will pick at em and eat a little bit), bok choy (sp?), collard greens, brocolli, pop tarts, french fries and chips.

Of course the salty or sweet stuff I keep at a minimum but she does like em and when she sees a bag of chips she goes crazy..

Sam & Jackie said that their birds like Shrimp I have yet to try it but I really want to.

Casper would walk a million miles for a bowl of popcorn!!! She also loves Cheerios. That's another thing she eats right out of my bowl.

My tiels are on a primary diet of Roudybush pellets. It did take a while to convert my seed junkies. They love fresh sliced apple, but don't eat much other fruit.

They love corn, cooked beans, pasta, wheat bread, cheese in small ammounts, cheerios, seed (of course, but only as a treat), dandilion leaves, kale, spinach, broccoli, carrots, coliflower, cooked brown rice, and the list goes on and on.

They are more willing to eat things they see me eat and are cut in tiny portions. I also feed them fresh foods from a birdie plate, (saucer), which makes them think they are people eating dinner. They will try anything on the plate!

My kids get a pretty good variety of foods, but for the most part now, wheat berries are a staple of their diet along with seeds and pellets and greens. Most of my flock will eat about anything we are eating, and at times, they eat and we get leftovers :) Whole wheat bread is an excellent table item and is good for them too. Just remember, variety is the best bet for any of them, and they will most likely eat what they see you eat, but as for fruit, think you can mostly forget them eating it. 'Tiels are just not fruit eaters for the most part.

Presentation is also a key to getting them to eat different foods.. little bitty pieces or huge chunks may work or something in between.. experimentation will give you the answers.
