Play time

Postby Luna Bella on Tue May 29, 2007 11:17 pm

I've noticed as some of you have also noticed that our tiels would rather be with us then play with their toys.

Several weeks ago I started to get on the floor with Luna for play time. Let me tell you she LOVES it :D :D I have some plastic craft bead that I've also made some toys with - they're about 1/4" or so - too big to swallow and small enough for her to pick up and manipulate. I lay on the floor with her ( a feat in itself  ), have some beads with me and she runs around, picks a bead up and runs around. She also holds the bead in her mouth and bends down to the carpet and rubs it on the carpet as she walks - I figure she likes the sensation on her beak. She has so much fun! I can practically hear her laugh and see her smile

I know a lot of you let your tiels romp around on the floor anyway - join'em!! I'm sure you'll have as much fun watching them as they have with you there with them.

Jo

Play Time

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed May 30, 2007 12:28 pm

Casper NEVER plays alone. She has just a few toys in her cage, but she never touches them. We sit on the floor and play with her play gym and toys in her toy bucket. I was doing some sewing last night. She climbed in a plastic bin on my sewing table and started to play with the stuff in there. She loves the bobbins, the measuring tape, and the brush that cleans the machine. She stayed in there about an hour. It was great, I didn't have to worry about a bored birdie on my shoulder. That is our quality time together.

Ohhh, I get on the floor with mine all the time! in fact I did it just a little while ago! I have to get boss used to us more without her flying away, and the floor is perfect----I bring them to a new room where they don't usually go and they just have fun checking it all out and looking for crumbs to eat off the floor! One thing I noticed with these two-----when I put woody on the floor, he always hops---it's so funny how he just keeps on hopping and I wonder why he does this? boss doesn't do it. Has anyone else ever noticed their bird hop? He does walk around too, but hops more than he walks-----unless he has a destination he wants to get to, then he runs! lol

Floor birdies are funny and fun to watch.. anything and everything goes in the mouth, just like a human baby :) Just keep the poo paper handy :) My kids have gotten a little older now, and don't want to play as much as explore. (looking for nest places) lol.. but now and then, we get in the floor with popcorn or toys and have a ball. Even the chicks will fly to floor if mama or daddy is there.. just so cute and curious!

Luna doesn't hop - she runs and boy is she fast!! It's amazing how fast those little legs can move. She plays in her cage sometimes - I guess if everything arranged in just the right way. Since it gets changed every time I clean it, I don't remember the way she likes it arrange for play. Plus her cage is a bit small and it's hard to have a variety of toys for her.

I'm going to make time to get on the floor with her more since she loves it so much. Next time I'll bring her play gym down too - see if she likes it there.

Rosie isn't really fond of me getting on the floor with her. When shes on the floor she likes to run around taking all her little toys outta the playpen. But she likes to play with me when we're on the couch or on my bed. She is so fun and so cute. I just love her.. And Sam your exactly right everything goes into their mouth. I always tell my Mom that shes teething since she likes to bite on everything like babies do whenthey are teething.

Play time

Noel mentioned one time that Sherwin will run away from her when he doesn't want to be picked up! Casper does that now too. When we are playing and I need to pick her up to put her back on her cage door, she runs under the table! Those little stinkers...they are so cute!

bubba LOVES the floor... little wierdo... he likes to find stuff to beak, scavenge by his cage for lost millet or pellets, and find stuff to click at... he doesn't much care if I am there or not though... though when I lay on the floor, he does love to perch on my butt...

Rosie loves to play on the floor too.. And like Bubba she likes to look for stuff on the floor and eat stuff that she has thrown out of her cage. But that gets me so nervous.. I am constantly with the sweeper around her cage I clean up around her cage like 4 or 5 times a day on my days off cuz I just worry about her eating stuff off the floor.. It drives me nuts. I feel like I should let her eat off the floor when she wants but I get all weirded out about it not being sanitary. I mean I wouldn't eat off the floor why should I let my baby.. Am I being weird? lol

Casey doesn't really seem to play with toys anymore, and Tomi Girl completely ignores everything except for seeds (this includes millet) unless she sees the others eating it too. She wont play with toys, but it takes her several weeks to start eating something new, however if she doesn't see the other tiels eating this food too, she wont eat it, even if she's had it for several weeks before-hand.

I haven't really noticed Pistachio taking much interest in toys, although I know Kiwi enjoys destroying them! She's into beads, leather, knots, small pieces of wood, even plastic. I'm not too sure about Sunshine but she seems interested in them at times.

I do wish Casey was still interested in toys like she used to be! The budgies at the petstore had a ferret wheel so I figured my guys (at the time) would enjoy one too. Sure enough they loved it! Got them a ferret wheel and they'd fight over who'd get to be in it and run! Casey even became intrigued enough to try and fit herself into a hamster wheel a few times!!! She was able to get in, but her tail ALWAYS stuck out.

SOOOOO..... I bought her a ferret wheel! She was SO happy with that thing! She'd walk quite quickly inside, pause, look out, then continue walking/running inside! She'd repeat that quite a few times, and it was hilarious! Or she'd walk right through it.

Now though, none of the birds seem interested in the wheels. I still have the ferret wheel but I'm not entirely sure what happened to the hamster wheel...

It's funny how they are about their food and their toys. Woody was never really too interested in toys, but then along came boss----he sees her play with the toys and of course he will follow right along and do whatever she does because that is his girl! There is one toy she just loves, it's one of those pinata things they chew on and it is getting chewed to bits! I find alot of pieces of it on the bottom of the cage and there is a huge hole in it now! Boss has been terrible about trying new foods and veggies. When I put the pot of greens in the cage, woody went right over and tried fairly soon after, but not boss. After a few days though of watching him eat it, she finally started eating it! Yay! I have noticed woody was bad about trying new things for a long time after we first got him------now that he has become so much tamer, he tries things now. The end of june will be one year that we have had woody. He has changed so much since then! He is SO used to people now that he just doesn't care what ANYbody does! even strangers----he treats them the same as us-----he even just laid there while the vet held him in a towel to examine him------never made a peep, or fought it, just ok-----do what you gotta do and lets get this over with attitude! He is SO easy! and so sweet, and nothing seems to bother him. The only complaint I have is that I have noticed woody is much quieter now with boss here and doesn't sing like he used to. He was always very vocal before, and I still try to encourage him, but he doesn't even wolf whistle anymore. Boss is quiet, so he is quiet----whatever boss does goes! she is the boss! lol they picked the right name for her!
