Would like to share my experiences... My first cockatiel Casey I received Nov (16th?) 2001. The very next month, Dec (the 22nd to be exact), I was given a cherry headed conure, Noel. Casey fell head over heals for Noel. She used to play with the budgies and drop toys, and tried to play in their hamster wheel (which lead me to getting her a ferret wheel that she used to run in!), but when she set eyes on Noel, I couldn't keep her away! Naturally, Noel wanted NOTHING to do with Casey, and being that Noel was 1/2 time larger than Casey I was nervous about letting them be together. Now, they are inseperable! I've had quite a few tiels, but Casey has never taken to any the way she's taken to Noel.
Second cockatiel was Clyde. He had lost his mate, and was given to me. He fell madly in love with Casey and wanted to be with her every living moment... however, Noel didn't like Clyde and would not accept Clyde... and being that I didn't really want to get another cockatiel so soon, I rehomed him, to a place where he's quite happy in now!
The next tiels were actually a family of tiels.... Father-Pistachio, Mother-Kiwi, Son-Kirby, Daughter-Sunshine. Kirby seemed to be a big stress within the family and would bully his family around except for dad who wouldn't take his crap. He loved to sing and knew a few words too, but most the times he was really on his sisters nerves. If they got along, they got along too well... otherwise Sunshine hated Kirby. Kirby has since been rehomed and the family seems less stressed.
Then Tomi Girl came along. She was pretty weak at first, but she's come a long ways. She seems to prefer human interaction rather than being with other birds. She's a hands off type of gal who just likes a humans presence. She doesn't seem to care for other birds company, at least not interaction. She's currently with the tiel family, and does somewhat shove them around like Kirby, but it's only when she's going somewhere and they get in the way. Otherwise though she sometimes seems happiest being caged alone.
They are all unique birds. Most times tiels do prefer the company of other birds, specially their own kind... but sometimes they may also prefer another species or even being alone. If you do find a tiel to adopt, I wish you the best of luck!
