Hi Roz,

Not sure I can be of much help, but you have at least 10 months or more before you have to worry about chicks interbreeding. Why not keep all 3, let them grow up together, and worry about interbreeding later. The chicks will most likely be much more "people" oriented by whatever time you decide to rehome one, but to answer the question about nestboxes.. two birds, once "paired" or planning, will look for somewhere to nest. If you don't provide a box, and they are semi-free, they'll find one! If you don't want chicks, that's another story. The hen will lay eggs when SHE HAS to, not when you want her to, and will lay WHERE she HAS to as well. I just found this out with my bonded pair, and I've got 5 chicks.

Yes, cockatiels can breed and reproduce without a nestbox... however chances are slimmer that any eggs or chicks born (without a nestbox) will likely live. They will inbreed as well if you don't separate them by sex.

I have a cockatiel family, used to consist of the parents, and two offspring, one male one female. There's been a few occasions where the two offspring were caught mating however no eggs were ever laid thus the issue of inbred chicks was not a worry. However, if the hen really wanted to lay eggs she would have, either off of a perch or in a food dish or otherwise.

In short, the cockatiel family were given to me, and I didn't want to necessarily keep the son of the family as he seemed to be the source of quite a bit of stress from the family (although he was tame, and knew a few words and loved to sing). I figured it would be best to rehome him, and to be honest I'm quite glad I did! In his new home he's got only another male cockatiel as a buddy, so no worries about breeding!

Once the chicks feather out, I would love to see pics of the underside flights of the two greys.

When my Bubba was a baby, his mom started plucking him too... she wanted another clutch, and wanted to clear the nest. His daddy fed him some after he was removed from mom, but the majority of the hand feeding was done by my aunt and uncle. I don't think she will stop plucking, so it looks like you are the new source of food.

Good luck, and welcome to the board,

Jackie
