Night fright @ Midnight

Postby chibi-tori on Wed Apr 25, 2007 10:58 pm

I had my first ever night fright tonight / this morning. Pixie and Ginger bloodied up their wings from a cage panic I guess, and Gizmo was so scared he couldn't move. Even got Smokey, Missy & Chibi all upset, and all the chicks as well. Pixie / Ginger not hurt bad, but we got blood all over us. Fortunately, I was only about 30 seconds getting the big light on. Have no clue what caused it, as there is night light near cage, but I suspect maybe Pixie fell off her perch and that caused all hell to break loose. She's done that before, but first time in 6 months. Poor babies... bit of cuddling and the shivering stopped, and the blood stopped too. Pixie is molting rather heavily on right wing, and has lost several wing-tip feathers. Just my luck.. me and broken blood feathers seem to go hand in hand :( It's late, and my bed beckons, yet again. Hope they sleep late in the a.m., as I'd sure like to........

Awwww sam! I'm glad that they are all ok. Woody had one night fright a long time ago too when his cover fell off his cage in the middle of the night, but no blood or anything, he was fine, so I guess it can happen even if your birdie doesn't seem prone to them. You know we just clipped woody's nails about a week ago, I got those birdie nail clippers and just did it because woody's nails were really creating problems for him sticking to everything with his little feet. I was very careful and took only a tiny bit off the nail. Well, that night while he was sleeping, I heard him during the night, just one quick flap and I heard his little footsteps on the newspaper on the bottom of his cage. (I put a small piece under where he sleeps because he poops so much there! saves cleaning the whole bottom out as often, just replace the small piece of paper) Then I tried to see him, but it was kinda dark in the room and I finally saw him on a lower perch and he climbed back up to his sleeping area and went back to sleep. I am thinking maybe because we clipped his nails that maybe he was having some trouble holding onto the perch and may have fallen off it during the night. We even flattened his perch just a bit in the area where he sleeps so he would be more comfortable while sleeping, and he still fell off of it, so I can understand how it may have happened to pixie.

Poor babies!! I caused a fright for Luna a week or so ago! I had to go in her room for something and knoked into the table with her cage. She got all upset flapping around recklessly. I opened the door for her and she came out and landed on the carpet.

I stayed up for another hour or so till she caomed down - what a night.

Knock on wood, Sherwin has not had a night fright. However, Buddie used to have them every so often and they used to scare me as much as she was scared! Glad to hear everyone is OK!

    Night Fright

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Thu Apr 26, 2007 2:32 pm

Noel, same with me. Diego had a few, but Casper has not had one. (FINGERS CROSSED).

Hope all is well. And I can imagine once one gets all fluffed up, it starts a chain reaction with that many tiels!

Sam, you and Emi are great parents (and now grandparents)!!!!!!

Poor babies. I have been very Lucky that Rosie hasn't had one. But we keep a night light on under her cage and we don't cover it. I hope that never happens cuz at night shes far away from us and we would never hear her :(

A couple nights ago it was lightening and thundering here in Missouri. Annie, my Too, is scared of storms so I went in to put a cover on her hoping that would help. I ALWAYS talk softly when I enter the room when it's dark so all 3 fids know I'm there. Well, Twinkie-Dink must have been in a really sound sleep because she didn't wake up until I was in the room for a couple of minutes. I guess she just saw my shadow and she went into a tizzy!! I started softly talking and turned the light on, opened her cage.............down she went on the floor (carpeted, thank God) and it took me a good 10 minutes of cuddling her to calm her down. The next day I tried cuddling her again..............nope! She wanted nothing of it. I'm only good for when she's scared!! :?

I've yet to see any signs of fright from thunderstorms, but being that we have had so few since I've had birds does not make them immune to it. I would venture to guess if we had TS's like you do Gloria, EVERYBIRDY would be scared out of their mind. I know what rough weather you can have there..

Oddly, none of the birdies has even given a 2nd thought to the other nights scare... which leads me to believe Pixie fell off her perch and caused it. Nonetheless, when wings flap, birdies react, regardless of the time or place.. "flock mentality" or so it's called...

Soooo glad that your babies are okay. Blood is always so scary! Chico didn't have night-frights after I got the nightlight- with one exception. before I moved in with the 'rents, Chico went to them for birdy-sitting. Dad figured that he didn't need the light (toughen up, boy!) and left the room dark. Well, it was the last time he did THAT! I guess being woken at 2:30am by a frightened 'tiel was not his idea of a good time...

As for TS's, we don't get many on the west coast of BC. Chico would just look at me & question the thunder but he was never actually scared. As for earthquakes, you've never seen a bird so nonchalant! He was sleeping on his swing, up on one foot, when we had a reasonable size shaker. All he did was slam the other foot down! Didn't even lift his head from under his feathers!

Give your feather-heads kisses from me please.

It's so funny how some of them have night frights and some don't. My parent's tiel charlie used to have them all the time, but only one time did it cause any blood, and just a little on his head. Woody doesn't seem to be prone to them at all and so far neither does boss. Just the one time with woody, his cage cover fell down off the back of his cage during the night and scared him, he flapped quite a bit. We have the dog here too and he gets up and moves around in the night and makes noise and he's a big dog, when he gets up off the floor or lays down he can be kinda noisy,(we have hard wood floor, not carpet and his claws make noise) yet none of this has ever scared the birds during the night. We get pretty good storms here during the summer too and the thunder didn't seem to bother woody too much----I am more scared of it than he is! lol
