evacuation

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Apr 17, 2007 7:51 am

I do not know how other people fared but the NE seacoast got whacked big time by this nor'easter. We got an evacuation alert. I was lucky that the tidal surge did not reach my house but all the houses around me got flooded up to their car windows.
I was already to load my birds in my car to head somewhere but I didn't know where! Alot of hotels do not let you bring birds and of course, shelters refuse birds (but are now allowing dogs which is problematic for birds).
Any suggestions?

When hurricanes cause evacuations in the southeast, motels and hotels that usually don't allow animals often do. Those that still don't usually know which ones do, so they routinely refer evacuees on to the closest. Good to do some calling now, while yesterday's weather emergency is still clear memory. Ask the motels along the evacuation route you would be most likely to drive. And specify "small birds" rather than pets in general.

BB
http://www.petswelcome.com/ - Here's a site that lists pet-friendly hotels (and other locations). A lot of hotel chains like Best Western, Comfort Inn, etc., allow pets (although I've never taken a bird, only a dog, but I can't imagine a company allowing a big, slobbery retriever and turning away an 80-gram bird in a cage).
Frankly, if there's a big storm with an evacuation and you can't find anywhere else to go, I'd just walk into the hotel with with the bird like that's a totally normal thing to do. Or stay someplace where you can get to the rooms without having to go through the lobby.
