future new birdie

Postby mytielwoody on Wed Apr 04, 2007 10:29 am

It's looking like a new birdie will be on the way soon here, a new friend for woody. His name is boss, and he is at a bird rescue, he is one year old and was told he does not bite, comes out of shoulders, and gets along well with other birds, currently living with three other females. He was badly neglected at his previous home  but now he's healthy and happy and looking for a new home. Here is a picture of him, he looks like a lutino, but he's not, he's a pied. Probably will end up getting him in a couple of weeks.............

Congratulations!! So nice to hear that you are rescuing Boss! He's going to be one lucky boy. Be sure to post some pictures when he's home and adjusted to his new family. :D

Kim,

I'm so happy for you and Woody.. Boss won't know how to act with such a great mommy to take care of him. I know you are already anxious :)

Did the current caretaker tell you he was a pied, because that picture sure looks like a lutino to me. I don't see any different colors except yellow, or perhaps it's a poor quality picture.

Congratulations!

I know, he looks like lutino, but was told he is a pied, so yeah maybe not a good quality picture, or maybe he has some gray mixed in somewhere that we cannot see in the pic. It's a done deal now, I am sending out a check to her for boss, and she will hold him until I can come and get him, which will be the weekend after easter. I can't wait! :D

Lutinos will have red eyes...

A clear pied will have black eyes....

So when you get a chance to take a good look at him you should be able to find out for yourself...

Congrats on your new addition!

Glad ya getting Boss! However, just looking over the birds I really wonder what exactly these people expect... I don't mean to be rude but if they are a rescue, and the birds don't come with cages then they should be all the same adoption fee (within the cockatiels at least).

And Blazer, he is just simply a black masked lovebird... he's not a "rainbow" anything. They wont top $60 for the birds themselves, and a good cage probably shouldn't be any more than $150.... unless they either bought an overpriced cage or bought a gigantic cage worth the money...

Same goes for Jack the LUtino ringneck (birds are not mexicans per say, *especially indian ringnecks*.... aka LAtinos...). You probably wouldn't buy one for more than $400 and even that could be overpriced. Plus a good sized cage you aren't looking at more than $800 (total for bird and cage) I'd say. I certainly hope his cage isn't the one shown behind him in that picture... as it doesn't even look like it's worth $100...

I don't mean the rescue any disrespect, however I'm just iffy on some of the things they expect from potential adopters... I just don't think they should ask rediculous prices unless there's a specific reason for doing so (such as medical bills... but even then there's not many rescues who will ask the full amount of money payed in medical bills back from a bird up for adoption - if they even ask for money that'd go towards payment of medical bills).

I know, I found out from my friend Lin that this rescue is not a legitimate one that is registerd with dept of agriculture. Lin's rescue is, and she told me to be careful, and looks like quarantine is a definite here because the health is not a guarantee. I think they are vet checked though when they get them. It's ok, I know the situation here and even if she isn't a real registered rescue, Lin said her heart is probably in the right place. the prices do kinda seem all over the place, the tiels are pretty cheap, and worst that would probably ever happen is I get stuck with a vet bill if something is wrong, and that is ok with me. I am willing to take that chance, as long as I'm careful and quarantine, everything will be fine! I'm just happy to get boss-----he's a handsome, happy birdie---she says he's healthy, and I'm sure he acts as such, and chances are he is, but I know there's still that chance, and willing to take! You gotta take chances sometimes in life and just look at what the reward will be----a happy healthy birdie! worth it to me! :D

MFids, I know so little of tiel genetics that this information you've shared should not surprise me, yet it does. Would you be kind enough to post a link to your favorite source on this so I can learn more? I've always thought it was the recessive silver gene that gives some Lutinos their red eyes. TIA!

All true lutinos will have red eyes, although there are some lutinos that have blue eyes. Recessive silvers should have red eyes, and cinnamons and maybe fallows too may have ruby eyes.

Clear pieds are also known as heavy pieds, and there is another name for this mutation as well...

I can't find specific information relating to the blue eyed lutino cockatiels (there's not much out there to begin with) but they are out there.... I don't really know much about the mutation myself however have seen pics (somewhere) of a blue eyed lutino.

It's looks like Woody will be a getting his new pal soon. It's exciting but I would keep Woody separated in his own cage for at least a month to just get used of "boss" and also to make sure boss is not carrying any "baddies".
I checked out that rescue website and noted their corresponding email starts with 'scuba". What is the full name of those rescuers? I might know them.(I'm a scuba instructor. that is why I am inquiring)
