Heather - yes - those are the same plants, however I would not pick from the side of the road because of the exhaust fumes from cars. If there are pastures, large fields etc in your area, they would be a better choice - of course get permission from the land owner. My father loves dandelion salad greens! Way too bitter for me.

JohnM - sorry for your lose, I don't think I could even go online shortly after Luna died and I've had her for only 17months!

Like christie, I hang kale (holds up well) in Lunas cage for her to nibble on all day, and she likes red leaf lettuce - gave her some last night!

Jo

They love Grevillea flowers, my lot go nuts when they see me approach with a bunch of those, below is the actual variety I have but there are many.

(Grevillea tenuiloba)

The image below is a different variety, but the flowers are almost identicle, in both cases the base of the flower has a small drop of nectar.

Ok, I do have a huge field behind my house and there are usually tons of danelions growing out there(my kids like to pick them in bouquets... )...and there really isn't any traffic that goes thru there...but do I only feed them the green parts or can they have the flower and everything?

Thanks again! :D

Dandelion is a member of the sunflower family. The leaves have irregular and jagged edges and a yellow flower grows from the hollow stem in the center of the rosette of leaves. The leaves have a rich and slightly bitter flavor. They should be harvested only from pesticide free areas when the tender young leaves are less than six inches long. Recent research has shown the dandelion to be nature's richest vegetable source of cancer-fighting beta-carotene. Dandelion greens are richer in potassium than bananas, and the flowers are richer in lecithin than soybeans. Dandelions contain many trace minerals. Commercial growing of dandelion greens is a ten million-dollar annual business so parrot owners should be able to find them in many stores. Many birds enjoy the yellow dandelion flowers as well as the greens. Both are excellent sources of vitamin A, calcium, and other nutrients. Medicinal benefits: Useful as a digestive stimulant and as a treatment for gout, skin problems, and liver disorders.

Dandelion is another herbal which is used in cases of impaired liver function. The main part of the plant that is responsible for the effect that dandelion has on the liver are the bitter compounds found in the leaves and the root. These help to stimulate digestion and effectively increase bile production and bile flow from the liver. This increase in bile production aids in improving fat metabolism in the body. This then makes Dandelion an effective herbal with birds that have impaired liver function.

My tiels love greens, but the four that I am baby sitting have no use for them, no matter how I present them. Thought they would come around, but it has been a couple of months, so I guess that is just how they are going to be!
