Can my tiel catch my cold?

Postby flemishe on Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:47 pm

I've been really sick these last few days--dizzy, achy and all the other good symptoms that come with a nasty cold.
I've read that tiels can and can't catch a cold from humans. Does anyone know the truth on this one? Poor Marley has been cooped up in her cage with very little interaction for three days because I have felt so horrible, AND I didn't want to give her any of my germs. She is sitting on my shoulder now, just as talkative as can be (getting it all out at once since she's been denied!)
I still feel pretty bad, but i just couldn't stand leaving her in the cage one more minute.

If it's viral, no, Marley won't catch it. But often people have bacterial infections simultaneously with a cold virus. If you're prone to that, you probably know it and shouldn't expose your bird to your germs. If you're past the stage of sudden sneezes, you could probably protect her by washing your hands before holding her or touching anything she might then touch, avoiding kisses, and leaving her room if you feel the need to sneeze, cough, or blow your nose.

Hope you're well soon, for both your sakes. Paca

Birds CAN catch colds, however they are of a different virus than the one we carry... thus, no they cannot catch OUR colds, or us theirs...

The only things that can be transmitted between human and feathered would be zoonotic diseases... and the most common ones are easily treated, especially if caught in time.

I had heard things too and while I was sick with a bad cold last month, I just tried to keep my distance from woody and also washed my hands before handling anything from his cage. Eventually I was like you and I just got him out because he had not had any outside time----he was on my shoulder and I started sneezing and sneezing, so I put him back. I am lucky because woody is pretty much happy inside his cage, but even so, I could tell he is used to time outside his cage now and used to that routine. He'd never complain or show it, but I think he is getting to like his time outside his cage. He just kinda goes with the flow! very good birdie!
