What size and brand cage do you have?

Postby Luna Bella on Sun Mar 11, 2007 3:32 pm

I admit Lunas' cage is a bit small at 18x13x21 :( What size do you have and are you happy with it? Is your bird happy with it?

I've been looking at the Avian Select Deluxe Small Parrot cages at Petco. For $80, it seems like a nice roomy cage, plus the colors are nice.

I don't know the brand I have now - the little stinker pulled the sticker off!

Thanks

Jo

Tomi Girl is in a Prevue Cockatiel Cage... it's a good sized cage for one tiel, but it could be bigger... This cage came with Charlie, the mitred however... Here's the cage...
http://www.prevuepet.com/item-info.asp? ... uct_ID=940

Image

My opinion? It was $90 (could be less elsewhere, but this cage was free... I'm just going by the price tag on the front) and not worth the price.... it shouldn't even be $50. Overall good for a tiel? Not really as there's not really much room to put perches and stuff inside the cage.

I'm not sure what type of cage Charlie is in, and I've forgotten who made the bourkes... However, IMO, the size cage (not bar spacing) would be a bit better for a cockatiel than the Prevue Tiel Cage...
Image

I don't know what brand cage the budgies are in, but other than weak legs (which is why it no longer HAS legs) it's a really good sized cage... primarly for budgies, and the like... although could probably fit two cockatiels comfortably (although more would also fit).
Image

The cockatiel family are in a HOEI flight cage... Kirby the son has been adopted and his sister Sunshine is up for adoption... it's slightly bigger than the cage above, and other than the small doors, and two trays instead of one, it's a good sized cage...
Image

The two flight cages aren't real easy to find.... I've found maybe two of the white version (and one near me!), and at least one of the silver one (in a movie in all places)...

I do have a few other cages, however the only other one I'll talk about is the HQ Flight Cage...
http://hqcages.com/product_info.php?cPa ... ucts_id=13
I got the cage for $100 (someone else bought it then never used it), and it's a really good size cage for its cost! It's a bit wobbly, although that could be due to the fact that I didn't align all bars correctly... I haven't tried to adjust them yet. The door latches are a bit awkward, and two smaller doors seem a tad fragile (i.e. not good for a strong medium to large parrot probably). Otherwise though, I like the cage size, as well as the one tray, and the cage DOES come in a double, with a removeable divider.

Supposedly, HOEI makes a similar cage to the HQ Flight Cage. Although another site says its Havana, although it could just be an HQ Cage. Can't tell you personally if ones better than the other or not, although I would suspect it would be just as good if not better...

There's also other flight cages under the brand name Aviantelligence Cages... Might want to look into those too.

I actually recommend looking into flight cages as they tend to be a good size for the smaller birds, plus, they aren't normally ridiculously priced!

In the few years since I last bought cages, Ebay has turned the cage world upside down. I recommend you look there for the largest cage you have room for, from a seller with a track record of satisfied customers. You can most certainly find more cage for your money on Ebay than at Petco.

What a bird needs, minimally, depends a lot on how much time she spends in her cage. Are you employed outside the home or is Luna out of her cage whenever she's not asleep and you're not grocery shopping for her dinner? Might she be welcoming a cagemate soon? Does she like to play atop her cage or does she prefer a boing or separate playstand?

As long as the cage is new, well-constructed for bird safety, and contains no zinc, your concerns will be the space available in your home. The larger her cage, the better for Luna, especially during times you must be away from home for work or trips and she's necessarily in her cage day and night. Best to always have feeder doors that allow access without opening the cage's main door. This could be a literal lifesaver if a birdsitter is in charge. Also good to have a large main door so cleaning is easier, and you want door latches that ensure Luna's safety.

The cage I have is the first one pictured by MFids - your right $90 is way too much - I paid 45. We don't have her on a ste schedule. She is out of her cage from 2-8 hours a day - depending on work, H (husband) who's health is not well, and whatever else is going on. She loves to climb inside and outside the cage.

The problem with it is there isn't enough room for her to comfortably spread her wings and hang over the perches.

If shopping on E-Bay as Paca has suggested, do NOT purchase from JM Exotics. Remember, I got a cage from him, and he was, frankly, a jerk, and the cage isn't even that great. I got the cage for $110. I would have prefered to go with the Havana Flight cage ranging from $125-155 depending on where you look and if shipping costs are included or not. Here is a link to one of the sites if you want to use it:

http://www.birdcages.com/medium-bird-ca ... key=AEC022

This is the cage I would have gotten for Bubba if I didn't get the one off of e-bay.

Actually, when I was looking for cages, I took a copy of one of the sites to a local pet store. They decided to contact their distributor and that they were going to begin to order them for the store--that is a way you can see it up close before you buy. They were selling it for the same purchase price I brought in on the print out. If you go to stores and request a specific type of cage, they may often offer to just contact thier distributor, and just get one for you.

Hope this helps

Jackie, aside from the guy being a jerk, are you and bubba happy with the size?

yes, very happy with the size, but not the quality--see post on cage repair :). Nevertheless--he has so much room to move around! However, with a cage so big with few horizontal bars means investing in a bunch of latters and more perches. when looking at bigger cages though, be SURE to check width between the bars-- 1/2 in-5/8 in is what you are looking for. Often times, you see bigger cage, it is for a bigger bird, with more distance between bars :)

It's on the petco website:

or this one

Both dimensions are 25x21x30

My kids are in Island Cages, the "Monaco" model, which are 18" x 22" x 24" or thereabouts. They are classified as wrought iron cages, and the construction is like a tank. The cages are all welded, not knockdown, and have horizontal bars on 1/2" spacing. Yes, they are small for several birds, but about the only time they are actually in there is at night, or for very short periods of time. I think I paid about $300 for both of them, but they will last forever. My search for the ultimate cage will never materialize because all the cage mfg's think birdies are helicopters, and make them way too tall. I want width and length, and a reasonable height, but not 6 or 7 feet. Probably more than most people want to spend for a cage, but got these when caught in a moment of weakness in the pet store :-)

Woody has a good size cage, 19x19x26 My boyfriend got the cage at a tag sale for two bucks! not bad huh??? it is a beautiful cage and it's easy to clean, and woody just seems to love it. Even with all the room I have managed to put too many things in it and have had to remove perches and toys because I overdid! lol
Paca is right, I just got a new cage on ebay just this past week for a very good price and it's bigger than woody's cage and also is square with a flat top that opens up----it's nice and I don't really like the dome top that woody has now because he can't go on top of it. I found a picture of an almost identical cage to woody's, only woody's doesn't have the stand, and his is silver in color----this one is black
http://cgi.ebay.com/Parrot-Bird-Cage-Ca ... dZViewItem
I got the new cage because I plan on getting another tiel over the summer------here is the new cage-----they seller plans on selling these cages regularly on ebay so I will let you guys know how things go with it, but very nice cage, nice and big @ 20x20x28.5
http://cgi.ebay.com/Parrot-Bird-Cage-Ca ... dZViewItem

I have already bought a bunch of things for the cage, can't wait til it gets here and wash it and set it up and put new things in it. I will keep it in the spare bedroom for now, and introduce woody to it gradually before I put him in there for good. It will be interesting because he really seems to love his cage now.

bubbabird----woody's cage has very few horizontal bars as well. I had to get ladders too---boy we seem to keep having things in common lol I got different kinds of ladders, different sizes, wooden ones, some plastic ones, he has five of them in his cage! I just attached most of them to the cage itself with string, and secured them at the point where the horizontal bar is. He loves his ladders, and he uses them constantly, and it was really no trouble to get them, they were fairly cheap and easy to put them in.

I really suggest looking into the flight cages... I got a good look at the flight cage I got, turns out theres not really much wrong with it, just that the cage was sitting on the stand a bit awkwardly... and I AM happy about the size of it! I'll upload pics soon!

As for the cages from petco, I don't think those would be an upgrade from what you have now...

And when looking for cages, IMO, you should stay away from any that have open tops (less you plan on keeping those closed... I heard a potential accident waiting to happen when a bird took off from one of those open tops and the perch came loose, causing the 'doors' to slam down), and it's also a good idea to stay away from ANY cages that have scroll work in the legs or ON the cage.... scrollwork can cause "v" shaped slits that could be an issue... and "V" shaped legs are also a danger....

Mfids, I do plan on keeping the top of the cage closed, and putting some things on top for him to play up there. What do you mean by V shaped legs? My bird is always supervised while out of his cage and spends most of time with me while out so how are the legs of a bird cage stand supposed to be dangerous to him? also I may not use the stand either, not sure yet though.

http://www.birdscomfort.com/cockatiel_bird_cage.html

There's one of the cages.... some cages have different "V" shaped legs... but they are all in the shape of a "V". The "V" is an issue if you think about it, what if the bird is trying to climb up or down the cage legs? Slips maybe? Gets its head caught in the "V"????? You have an issue.

Thats why I prefer legs with STRAIGHT legs...

Ok, thank you very much for explaining that! I will look at the legs closely for that when I get the cage and if it looks like that could happen then I may not use the stand under the cage, but for now though, my bird is right with me when he is out so I would never let him climb the legs---he doesn't really spend time on the floor, but if things ever do change with that, I will take that into consideration.
