bird show issues

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:53 am

every year I attend the BOAf bird show/mart. And every year I end up complaining to the directors of the show about a vendor.
A couple of years ago, one vendor was selling cockatiels that looked terrible at a 'discount rate'. One tiel had a protruding red eye. The next year this same vendor was selling severely plucked tiels at a 'discounted" rate. I wrote a letter to the director about this. It made me sick.
The next year I didn't see this vendor so I was glad.
However, this year I saw a different vendor doing the same thing. Poor cockatiels severely plucked, deformed beaks. missing nares etc.. It is heart breaking to see these poor sweet birds in such a state.
I hope to get to one of BOAF's meetings even though it is over an hour drive at night to personally address this issue of setting up ethical guidelines in regards to selling cockatiels/birds.

Perhaps that particular individual(s) need to be investigated by the local animal control or the SPCA. Yes, it's a shame, no, it's a crime anyone would even contemplate letting a bird get in that condition. Perhaps a flood of e-mails from our group would tend to sway the management? We've made a difference before.

That's horrible! There are terrible people in every industry - yes, our beloved tiels are an industry and people make a living with them. However it's no excuse for animals to be kept in that conditon - we could only imagine what the "home office" looks like.

I agree with Chibi - call the Animal Control, SPCA, Humane Society or whoever. I would also report the management of the show for not adhearing to the basics of care and prevention. Who knows if these birds are diseased and are spreading it to everyone?

I agree too-----I would be more than happy to help with the "flood" of emails! Those poor birds-----it's sad. Where is it that you went to and saw these birds? In mass somewhere?

bird show issues

Postby bostonbudgie on Thu Mar 08, 2007 7:57 am

Thanks guys for your thoughts.
Most of the birds are in good shape at these shows but there is always one vendor that brings in rough looking birds. It is heartbreaking because I want to buy them and rescue them but that only encourages these vendors to do it even more.
Yes, this show in in NH. They have a meeting this monday and I hope to make it so I can address the club of possible guidelines for vendors.
A flood of letters would be a good idea to hopefully do something about this problem. Stay tuned and I will let know after monday.
Woody, if you decide to go to the show in May let me know:-)

Ok, I will let you know-----I didn't want to go in march because of the weather and possibility of snow, so I was thinking of going in may when it's warmer. It's a couple of hours away from me too.
