No avian vet in our state or the next -- what then?!

Postby darylann on Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:01 pm

OK, what do I do if I need an avian vet and there are none even listed in my state or the nearest neighboring state? :?: I live in Michigan's U.P., and the only avian vet list I could find showed none in Michigan, and none in nearby Wisconsin either. Is my only option to make do with any vet that will take them? I haven't asked around yet because I really don't know anyone else who has birds, except for the local pet shop owners (which I plan to ask for their suggestions).

Try the yellow pages. Look for "exotics" in their ad, they may also list birds. If there isn't one close to you maybe you could get a referra from the local vet.

    vets in Michigan

Postby bostonbudgie on Sun Mar 04, 2007 2:32 pm

In the bird talk magazine "birds USA 2007" list quite a few bird vets in Michigan. There are too many for me to list. check on www.birdchannel.com they may have them listed.

Use the AAV link Jackie provided to see which of Michigan's or Wisconsin's avian vets is closest. Then phone that vet to ask if there is another avian vet closer to you.

Also, call both state's vet schools to ask if they could give you contact information for a vet near you. And, again, ask that vet if there is anyone still closer.

Have you looked in the yellow pages of your phone book?? People here told me when I moved here that there were no avian vets in this area, but I found one in the phone book. Call some of the vets in your area in the phone book and ask them if they have an avian vet or know where you can find one. Find pet stores with birds and ask where they take their birds if they get sick.

Not all veterinarian practices advertise seeing birds. My vet has no local or other advertising indicating such, but in the bldg, there are. I got a referral from another vet who was not avian inclined, so you might have to call some offices and just ask.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't been able to find a vet in my area, but with the search tool, one popped right up in my town.

    Thanks for great tips!

Postby darylann on Tue Mar 06, 2007 9:08 am

The tips and links are much appreciated! The only list I had was apparently very outdated or very incomplete! Now I've at least got something to go on. Still, none on the list are within a couple hundred miles -- not very encouraging if a dire emergency pops up! But I'll start phoning around and see if I can find a more local vet who sees birds.

    Thanks again!
    :)
