Getting fickle tiels to eat veggies!

Postby Loren12982 on Sat Mar 10, 2007 5:21 pm

I had this problem with several of my tiels . .that were not weaned to fresh food ..so what I did was start out with frozen mixed veggies, you can cook them or run them over warm water ..cooking wastes less water and makes them warmer. I then make sure they are cool enough and mix seeds in with the veggies. They will go straight for the seeds ..and pick them out .. but they will also get a taste of the veggies. My birds get seeds in the beginning of the day . when they pig out and finish the seeds in the am they have to eat pellets all day long I feed zupreem pellets, and roudybush pellets and harrisons pellets all day. Then at night cause they have been hungering for seeds all day I give them their fresh food mixed in with their seeds . .they love this and have to eat fresh veggies to get to the seeds. Soon they were eating fresh food . .and I didn't have to put the seeds in there to encourage them to eat them. Just a simple trick that works like a charm. Tiels are not big fruit eaters ..but they love veggies especially carrots I have noticed. So hang in there and remember you will be wasting more veggies then they are actually eating, but eventually they will be eating them like little champs.
Hope this helps!?

One thing I've found works for getting them to eat or at least try different foods is to use different dishes. I've got a Japanese wife, so I have all kinds of different small dishes, and when they won't try or eat from one, I'll try another color or shape. Lots of times it works..

For fresh foods I use small short glass ashtrays of all things! They are heavy, and don't tip over when she stands on the edge. I get the brocolli slaw in the bag - she gets that every day. I hang a leaf of kale in the cage for her to nibble on as she wants to. For dinner I'll give some peas, or corn and a piece of Beak Apetit! I just microwave everything for a few seconds to take the chill out. Another thing I started doing is putting the peels from carrots and parsnips through the cage bars so they hang. She loves them too. Since they are thin she can bite them easily.

The most important things are giving it to her all the time, and YOU eat it also-she'll want what you eat.

Rosie, hasn't wanted what I eat. And usually all the time we sit down to eat I will take her something from my plate or I will put a piece of whatever it is in her bowl. She snubs real food.. But I will continue to try to get that little girl to eat real food.. Shes all round :)
