Oh My Gosh You Guys

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Sat Mar 03, 2007 1:05 pm

Guess what?????? Casper sings!!! :D

As most of you know, she is a speechless, mostly noiseless bird. Except when she is trying to locate me in the house. Well, out of the clear blue sky, this morning she started to chirp a few notes. Then before you know it, she was singing a bit, then she even did the wolf whistle! I am so excited!!!!!

I really thought I had a mute on my hands. I know it has only been about 5 months since we got her, but she really never says anything.

And to top it off, Brian is in a meeting this morning, so he missed the wolf whistle. I hope she does it again.

That's cool! Luna lets out an almost monotone type whistle/chirp now that the hormones are going. Around 3-4 pm she'll start little squaking - chiping sounds - like she is talking to someong, very cute.

I am a pathetic whistler myself :( But I manage a couple of very soft notes. She has picked up a little wolf whistle type, we hear it about once a week or so. She's so darn cute though, and now that her flights have grown in a bit she flies right to me and lands on my shoulder :D

Don't worry Lisa, I bet by summer when she is a year old or so, you are going to wonder what happened to your cute quiet little birdie!

Lisa, that's great! Just out of curiosity, does she hear any outside birds chirping that she might be trying to imitate? Gizmo has started mocking a mocking bird :-)

    Singing Casper

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Sun Mar 04, 2007 10:44 am

I think she may have been copying the lovebirds. They were doing a really pretty "song" yesterday morning and that may have got her going. I don't think she is copying us at all. But after I heard her doing the little singing bit, I did the wolf whistle twice or three times. Then a few minutes later, she did it! So she did copy me on that one.

I was suprised that she did it. Like all you "male owner's" say, yours do it all the time and really early. I never expected that to come out of her little beak!!!

But wouldn't you know, Brian came home from his meeting and she never peeped another note for the rest of the day.

This morning, she started to do a few notes, but she is over on her cage door napping right now.

I love it when they sing - so pretty. Pablo was content to make up his own little songs. Danny seems to want to mimic. Unfortunately, I'm like you, Luna - every attempt I make at whistling actual tunes or recognizable patterns are utterly pathetic. Twinkle, Twinkle may as well be a Wagner aria, where my talents are concerened.

I guess I'm a pretty good whistler! Woody likes to make up his own songs and whistles too, and I can immitate almost all of them----most of the time I immitate him instead him immitating me! Some of them are so complicated that I only whistle the ending of them to him when he does them-----then one time he left off the ending for me to finish! People sure are right when they say that birds train their owners well! lol I guess I just want him to realize that I am trying to relate to him somehow---trying to communicate---may encourage him more to do the same.

Be careful what you wish for in whistles :-) Emi taught Smokey how to call the dog, and then Chibi learned, then Gizmo. Now, they all slaughter it so badly, it sounds much like a car that won't start.. but it's over, and over, and over, and over, ad nauseum. It absolutely drives me nuts. I have to whistle something else to get them to stop, but a lot of times, they all go deaf, dumb and blind when whistling. I can go up, touch them on the back, and they act like I don't even exist! Soooo.. if you teach them to whistle, be sure it's something you want to hear over and over and over... Experience knows all about it :-)
