A new toy

Postby Luna Bella on Fri Mar 02, 2007 12:20 am

Her new favorite toy this week is a single aqua colored bead! She plays with it by carrying is sround and dropping it, holding in her mouth and rubbing it on the carpet whe she walks, holds it in her mouth and grabs the edge piece of brown paper bag at the same time lifts the paper lets the bead go and watches as it rolls down the slide!

I've actually laid on the floor to play with her. I'll toss the bead a foot or so, she gets it and waddles around for a minute or two. Then we repeat it. Tug of war is also fun with a small toy she can grab. She prefers the keet size foot toys over the tiel size. They go in her mouth - never the feet.

A New Toy

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:40 am

It is funny how they kind of play fetch. Casper loves a couple of cat toys that I got her. They are the balls that have a bell inside. But it is not a solid ball, it has plastic lines / strips so you can see inside the ball to the bell. Hope I explained that right. That way, she can put her beak around the strip and pick it up. Looks so cute to see a bird carrying around a ball!!!

Awww, I can't wait til mine wants to play like that out of his cage. Unfortunately he is still very insecure when he's out and is turning into one those "velcro" birds, only wants to be on me while he's out. He still has little interest in toys too----I go out and buy a new toy for him every time I am at the pet store! I have tried everything, but the only toy he likes and actually plays with is his mirror-----it has toys in front of it, some plastic beads and things and he plays with that. Well, I have tons of toys now anyway for when I get him a birdie friend!

A New Toy

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:58 am

Woody has come A LONG way!!! He is doing great.

Casper didn't play with toys for the longest time. She just wants to sit on you. But she is getting a little more independent and goes on the floor more often. That is where we leave all of her toys.

She doesn't like the big toys that are hanging in her cage though, she never touches them at all! My step-son made her a bracelet with some beads on it and hung it in her cage. That is the only thing she touches in her cage. She will pick at it a bit, but that is about it.

I thought of a toy idea that I'll probably make for my brats, but I'll share the idea with ya'll too. Go out and find a bunch of GOOD shoelaces, the kind made for dress shoes. Take the shoelaces and double them over so you have a big wad of the ends with the aglets on them, then cut them in half. Take the opposite end and add to the bundle, then put it in a hole drilled or punched in a sturdy piece of cardboard or balsa wood. Place some kind of hanging device, string, chain, or whatever you have handy, and hang it from the top of the cage. With mine, that would occupy them for hours on end, chewing the ends off the shoelaces. No need for anything elaborate.

Sounds like a good idea Chibi-tori. I make a lot of little things for her using the large plastic beads, sisal and hemp. Heck, she likes the hemp best its' "far out" LOL

They will also play with the toys more if we don't spoil them!! I try to give her cage time even when I'm home to she does learn to play with her toys and entertain herself. God forbid anything should happen to us or we have to leave her with someone, I want her to be able to keep herself occupied. The other reason is with my work schedule, I could be out up to 15-18 hours, even though my husband is home, he is disabled, and can't "run" everytime she wants something.

I also noticed when I started playing "with" her instead of just watching her (love to do that!!) she has been engaging the toys more.

My brats are so spoiled, till it's really gotten to be a problem. I can't even go to the bathroom without someone screaming for me in the mornings. They have all the freedom they want, but because of that, it has severly hampered Chibi and Ginger's wing feather growing. We have started a routine now, that lets out a couple at a time, keeping the two main flyers in the cage when the others are out, as they are the primary cause of the panics. Anyhow, they don't like being caged up, but for the betterment of the whole flock, it's got to be done. It's my fault too, but I think all will eventually get used to the idea of spending more cage time than out time.

How cute. I can't wait till Rosie starts playing with stuff like that.. She still won't play with anything in her cage although today when she was on her perch on my desk and I have a cup with pens, files, orange sticks and theres a straw in there and she loved that straw. I even grabbed my phone to snap a pic and even tho it's not very clear I'm gonna share it with you guys.. Just ignore all the crumbs around her she was eating those healthy carrot toppings outta my hand and the water is dirty cuz she was soaking some in there lol..
