Poison plant scare

Postby chibi-tori on Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:05 pm

I got my first possible poison plant scare this morning with Missy. She got up on top of the china cabinet where my wife keeps some kind of green plant thingy.. it's been there forever I guess, but had almost died. We were watching her and Smokey explore, especially Smokey, as he'd NEVER ever gotten up on top of the china cabinet, even thought Coco used to perch there daily. She also would chew on the plant (which neither one of us has no clue as to name) and never suffered any ill effects. The plant is a very common houseplant with slightly variegated teardrop shaped leaves, and it spreads / runs / climbs all over everywhere. Anyhow, I happened to be eating an early lunch, and looked up and saw Missy vomiting. I got her off after the 2nd time and looked at what she had tossed up. They appeared to be half-digested white millet, but did not look that close. Since she had vomited whatever it was she ingested, I figured I'd better get her to the vet, just in case something were to be poison that had a slow reaction time. Vet just flushed out her crop and although Missy did not act any different from normal, I just didn't want to take any chances, especially after not knowing for sure if the plant was poisonous. She appears OK now, but is in the cage sleeping right now. I never want to be worried about plant poisoning, so everything that is of unknown species is now gone. Emi (wife) does much with african violets, but I know they are on the safe list, so that's about the extent of live plants in the house now.

Have you identified all your houseplants as being safe?

Yikes  Glad to hear she hasn't suffered ill effects - could have be a cooincidence, but better to be safe then sorry. Afterall - when in doubt, throw it out!

I have a spider plant Luna seems to be fond of. Safe for her but not the plant :D

I'm also growning parsley and sometimes I'll keep a sprig in a glass of water for to nibble on - she seems to enjoy that too!

I'm not to sure about some others I have off the top of my head - but they are not where she would be able to go unattended. We try to keep her where we are at all times and have it "Luna proofed".
