Questions about pairing birds

Postby Maggie Bedwell on Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:22 pm

I had two birds one male, one female. They were raised from egg to current time together ,seven years. My poor female died this morning suddenly. I am worried about my male. Can or should I replace with a new companion? Will my guy accept a strange new bird? I'm very worried about how he is going to take being alone!

I'm very sorry you've lost your bird, Maggie. I've also lost several and have found that tiels rebound quickly, usually. I had one who grieved for long months, but all the others found new friends within the flock fast. I definitely think your bird would welcome a new friend by the time a 30-day quarantine of a new bird ends.

First though, what killed your hen? Are you sure it wasn't something contagious? If you aren't certain and you haven't already taken her body to your vet for necropsy, please do so ASAP in the morning. Put the body into a baggie into the refrigerator meantime. I know how hard that can be, but her spirit is already flying free. The body is just what's left behind, not your girl.

Next, please select a breeder very carefully, many good references, good vibes, etc. Don't put your bird at deadly risk. If you're uncertain what I mean, just say so and we can chat further.

Again, my condolences. I suspect it will hurt you to hear your bird calling for her the next day or two, or four. But he'll be okay because he has you watching out for him.

Maggie,

I am so sorry about your baby. I lost one last June in a similar situation, and my male mourned her loss for months. It just broke my heart to hear him call for her. We did find him a mate, and in fact, my flock is now at 6.

As Paca suggested, a necropsy would be the best to find out if there is a health problem existing, or something that might kill your male or another bird.
