the funniest thing

Postby mytielwoody on Mon Jan 22, 2007 7:28 pm

Ever since someone posted a video here of their tiels----cassie and I lola I believe were there names-----I go to that site and watch videos of tiels-----they are just so cute! I notice that my tiel is extremely responsive, especially at night, to when he hears another tiel. Tonight he was sleeping in his cage, and all I had to do was find a video of a singing cockatiel, and he was singing away too in no time! Every time he hears another tiel chirp or sing, he does it too, even if he's sleeping! he will wake up, and be singing away, loud! then about five minutes after that, I see him sleeping again! We were even watching tv last night and this woman went into another woman's house and you could hear a bird---I think it was a tiel, you could barely hear it, but my woody sure did! he answered back every time he heard it! The impression I get is that he likes hearing other tiels-----he seems to get happy when he hears them, and it makes me think he would like to have another tiel around, which is good because I am thinking of getting another one maybe over the summer. I wonder if I am right that because he gets so happy at the sound of another tiel, if that means he would like a birdy buddy.

Mine gets excited too when he hears another tiel. HarpSpirit started a new message with a video of a cockatiel whistling a piccolo solo and he does a fantastic job!! Sherwin chirped non-stop while the other bird was singing. He doesn't mimic the tunes like Woody does but he does seem to like the sound of other birds. :D

All of my kids start chirping and getting excited when I play other cockatiel sounds and voices. Smokey also goes beserk when he hears a crow or a whippoorwill sound. Over time, I've captured all their voices onto my Garmin Ique, and I'll play themselves back, and it still gets a response. I even have some odd squawks and chirps of Coco, and Smokey gets excited about that. Maybe kind of cruel to do that to him, but he doesn't seem to get depressed about hearing her and not seeing her.

I think you're right and that he would like a friend very much, and still love you. Buy from a good breeder, get a thorough well-baby exam ASAP, quarantine carefully while you and the baby bond, and then enjoy many, many years of tiel joy.

When the time is right----I will. I would like to get a young baby, but the reason I didn't do that when I got woody was because I wanted to make sure I got a male. I have a friend----an online friend who is a foster home to resque birds. Her name is Lin and she is about 50 miles east of me. When I first got woody, he didn't like the food we got him, and a bunch of other things, so what I did was I packed up the things he didn't like and sent them to Lin for her birds. I also send her my birdtalk magazine after I am done reading it, so that way two people can enjoy them instead of them just ending up laying around when I am done with them. I really kinda wanted to adopt another tiel from her when I am ready. I just worry about picking a good match for woody so they will get along good. He's such a good bird, so happy and gentle, but I'm thinking Lin lives with these birds and sees how they are and knows the sex, so she can help me find him a feathered friend that hopefully he will like.

If you had the opportunity to do so, it would be neat if you could take Woody to her flock and let him pick out a mate, but things being as they are with respect to disease transmission, probably wouldn't be such a good idea, but its one that would be better than we humans picking out a mate or companion for our charges.. Really something to think about too.. kind of like the pre-arranged marriages that were so common in the far east until the 20th century
