How to?

Postby pattiW on Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:26 pm

I've got a tiel [female] thst needs to warm up and get over the fear of touching. Any ideas on how to start that :?: I have a male that is very mean sometimes to her but they co-exist. She work's well with the perch method. :?: :?:

PattiW,

How old is she, and how long have you had her? Was she owned previously by someone?

You might have some success by taking her into the shower stall, or other very close area, and just slowly get her acquainted with you, and offer a finger or hand very slowly. You also might take her into a darkened room, and very gently handle her, all the while reassuring her she's OK, and you're not going to hurt her. If this is a new bird, I've give her a little time to adjust to her new home before starting any type of handling routine or treatment. Usually, birds will warm up to you once they trust you, and that is of utmost importance -- to gain their trust.

Oh, I hated hearing that when I first got woody! I hated hearing he may never like being out of his cage, being held----I think in most cases, if you really want your bird more tame, you take the time to spend with him and talk to him, patience and time---he will come around. Tonight woody was out with me and he just seems so content now on my shoulder---I took him over to his cage to let him go back, and he didn't go! he stayed with me! I would have never believed that day would come a few months ago. He will even take a snooze while he is out now as long as he is nearby my face. Talk to your bird, spend time with him, eat with him, try immitating his chirps or songs, and I'd be willing to bet money that he will come around.
