Molting in January?

Postby flemishe on Sat Jan 20, 2007 10:34 pm

I read somewhere that said tiels molt in Spring and in Fall. Marley is starting to shed little feathers everywhere, so I am assuming this is a molt? Is it normal this time of year?

Casper seems to be going through a major one right now. She just started losing some larger feathers. And now, lots of the little ones. My 2 lovebirds seem to be molting too.

All of mine are molting, too. In fact, I took them to be clipped yesterday, and my newest budgie started to bleed. Scared me pretty good. The friend who clipped them said she's clipped all her birds regularly for years and never hit a blood feather before. I wonder why everybody is molting now?

Inside climate controlled homes, birds molt year round. Sometimes a bit more than other times, but it's not just a seasonal event as in the wild. When heaters first come on in the fall, the heat can feel like spring to them, so they shed their winter coats. In spring, when we open our windows and let in warm fresh air, they might do it again.

Funny why they are all doing it in January. Nothing has changed in my house for the last few months. Still have the windows closed, still have the heat on.

Luna is molting also - gets a bit nippy with the hubby - he's not to thrilled with it. Hopefully it will last a few more weeks.

She lost two flight feathers - 1 on each side and her flying has increased a bit. She can go further and gets a little lift also. Yikes!!

I suspect a molt this time of year has something to do with the amount of light / dark periods. Mine have gone through the fall molt, and nobody is really shedding feathers to speak of now.

No signs of molting here, and he is due soon. When we first got him he was in his first molt-----actually, his molt was over in about a week after we got him, and that was in late june. That first week we had him there were alot of feathers on the bottom of the cage.

One of mine is molting too, as is our clinic bird. Birds may molt at regular intervals in the wild, but they don't in climate controlled environments like our homes. I wouldn't worry.

Mine just started a heavy molt a few days ago and he does not like it! Of course I'm sure most birds don't like it. If a large feather falls out (like a tail feather) he fusses at it. :)

Molting

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Jan 22, 2007 12:02 pm

Casper hasn't lost any tail feathers yet since we got her. She has lost a few wing feathers. It is strange. We clip her wings. Some of the wing feathers grow faster and longer, but those are the ones that fall out.

In the wild, molting must happen gradually to enable the bird to fly and navigate accurately. Birds take a few years to molt and replace all their feathers.
